This is happening here too, not just RI. It’s just adding to the problem!
‼️Rhode Island Shelters/Rescues what the heck are we doing?!?!‼️
We can NOT even believe the number of cats coming through our spay/neuter clinics that have been adopted out by RI licensed entities INTACT. This is absolutely ridiculous!
These cats are coming to us in heat, had litters, pyos, spraying, adopted out months some even years ago.
Half of them were transported here from Southern states. As if we dont have a backlog of people in our own state needing affordable spay/neuter lets tack on more. 🤷♀️. But whatever you got them here so at least do your part.
We understand some of you who adopt out intact have your adopter sign a contract stating they will get the animal spayed/neutered by a certain age and you wipe your hands clean of all responsibility. Do better. You are literally part of the problem. We had one organization recently who wrote in the contract that the adopter will get the animal spayed by 6 months of age, cat was 5 months at the time. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Where the heck is that going to happen in a month and not cost a ridiculous amount of money? Please tell us and stop setting up these excited newly adopters for failure when you know that's not going to happen.
If you have an animal intact that you are adopting out, please follow up! It's not that hard. We did it for many many years. Book the appointment for your adopter. Even if the appointment is 6 months out, who cares. Put it in your calendar so when the day comes, you know who to follow-up with. When that day arrives you get proof that spay/neuter took place and you bet your @$$ if they didn't show up, you should be all over them by noon that day.
As if the public can't be challenging enough to educate, now we have to educate other licensed agencies who should know better. DO BETTER! Need some feedback to come up with a better system? We will gladly help with that to avoid any unnecessary future offspring born to that cat you just adopted out, or the cat who now has a serious health problem, or the one who is in danger of being kicked out of their home because they are howling or spraying all over their apartment. Yay, kudos to you for "rescuing" that cat from a crappy situation only to prolong other future suffering situations. 🙄
Ohhhhhhh and don't even get us started on the $200 adoption fee you collected for that one drop of dewormer and distemper vaccine that the Southern shelter actually paid for!!!!! What a joke.
This picture sums up exactly how we feel right now. Do better or get out.
