Dana Brady, Executive Director, Perry Blackman, Board of Trustees member, Kevin Gale, Retired Laborer, and Linda Blackman spent the day in support of this great cause. Proving yet again that ORGANIZED LABOR MAKES A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY!

Today, we were honored to support the The Tug McGraw Foundation and Philadelphia Phillies charities while remembering LC (Larry Christenson). It was a wonderful afternoon centered around a powerful message of resiliency, made even more special by the tremendous showing of Philly Labor support. For the Samuel Staten, Sr. Charitable Trust, Labor Day is personal. Our roots are in organized labor, and we are proud to carry on Samuel Staten, Sr.’s legacy of standing with working families and giving back to the community.

Today, we honor the union members and families who have worked hard, stood together, looked out for one another, and helped strengthen their communities along the way.

We are proud to be part of the labor community and grateful for everyone who continues to support the Trust and the work we do.

The Samuel Staten, Sr. Charitable Trust is deeply saddened by the passing of Larry Christenson, 1953–2026.

Larry was selected third overall by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 1972 MLB Draft, just one day after graduating from high school. He made his Major League debut at only 19 years old and spent his entire 11-year pitching career with the Phillies from 1973 through 1983. He was also a proud member of the 1980 World Series championship team.

Following baseball, Larry built an equally successful career as President and CEO of Christenson Investment Partners. Larry and his company were longtime supporters of the Samuel Staten, Sr. Charitable Trust. He consistently stood with organized labor and shared our commitment to giving back and creating opportunities for people throughout Greater Philadelphia.

More importantly, Larry’s relationship with the Trust went far beyond business. He was a longtime friend of both the Staten and Blackman (and Brady) families, and we were fortunate not only to have his support, but also to call him a friend.

Larry Christenson made his mark on the mound, in business, within the labor community, and through his generosity to countless charitable causes. His legacy extends far beyond baseball, and he will be greatly missed.

We extend our deepest condolences to Larry’s family, friends, former teammates, colleagues, and everyone whose life was touched by his friendship, kindness, and support.

Rest in peace, Larry.

• Award notifications: August 1
• Funds applied to the Fall Semester

🌸 Spring Scholarship Cycle
• Application deadline: November 1
• Award notifications: December 1
• Funds applied to the Spring Semester

⚠️ Late or incomplete applications cannot be accepted.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that all required materials are received by the deadline, including:
✅ FAFSA documentation (submitted by USPS or as a PDF)
✅ An official transcript submitted through Parchment or mailed directly by the educational institution in a signed, sealed envelope
✅ Mid-semester grade report (Spring Scholarship Cycle only)
✅ All additional required application materials

The Scholarship Fund will no longer contact applicants to request missing or incomplete documents. Carefully review the application instructions before submitting your materials.
