It might feel like summer in town, but the mountains still are getting all types of weather! 🌬️ ❄️ 🌧️

Over the weekend LSAR responded to assist hikers out of the Winds. The stranded hikers reported a storm had delivered snow, wind, rain and hail, obscuring their route with drifted snow. They had retreated to a camp at Valentine Lake, were uninjured and safe, but only had food for another day. LSAR volunteers hiked in that evening, encountering falling snow and 20-40 mph winds most of the way in and arriving at the subject’s camp at 11:30pm. The next morning, everyone was able to hike out, but encountering similar windy and drifted conditions on the trip out.

Though the stranded party’s clothing was inadequate for early summer conditions in the mountains, the pair of stranded hikers did several things right. They did not venture into terrain they were not prepared for, which could have resulted in their getting lost or injured. They did not move from their reported location, which allowed rescuers to find them easily.

A good reminder to prepare for all types of weather! And if you are lost- don’t relocate! LSAR will come to you

May showers bring mock missions! 🌧️⛑️🛶

LSAR hosted a mock mission this morning on the Popo Agie that had it all: swiftwater team deployment, searching, medical patient, communication with cell phones/radios, tracking technology, IC logistics, litters, water crossings, etc etc.

Big thanks to our education leadership, watch command, IC team, and swiftwater lead for putting this together. 👏🏽
