What saint inspires you:
I love St. Peter. His faith in the face of his failures inspires me to continue turning to Christ when I fall short.

How does being outdoors change the way you pray or hear God:
My prayer is much simpler when I’m in the backcountry. “Lord, give me the strength to endure...” or a small prayer of thanksgiving. There’s an incredible sense of scale in the prayer—the smallness of me and the vastness of His creation.

What’s one moment outdoors where you felt especially close to God:
I was recently leading a course in the canyons of Moab. While ferrying heavy backpacks up a particularly steep section of the canyon wall, my instructor team and I offered a prayer for the owner of each pack. A simple “Hail Mary” lent so much meaning to our toil. This sacrifice for our students allowed us an opportunity to walk alongside Christ carrying His cross.

What’s a story of transformation you’ve witnessed:
There have been so many over the past few months! One young woman that stands out to me, however, went home knowing that she is good not because of what she does, but because of who she is. Getting to watch her come alive in the backcountry and be renewed in her identity as a daughter of God was such a gift! Her story is one of many that I continue to carry in my heart.

Favorite piece of gear:
Chocolate and coffee!

During the month of May, we are especially grateful to honor one of our COR patrons - Our Lady of Champion.

In 1959, our Lady appeared to Adele Brice  in Champion, WI and said:

“Gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they need to know for salvation.”

Her message continues to inspire our mission today!

As we gather in the wilderness, we hope to lead others ever closer to Christ through prayer, community, and faithful witness.

at COR, we invite others to go deeper — beyond comfort, beyond fear, and beyond what feels safe. Growth happens when we trust God enough to step into the uncomfortable, serve boldly, love radically, and answer the call He places on our hearts. The deepest waters often hold the greatest purpose.

Who do you become when you are challenged? At COR, we remind people early and often that our courses exist to TRANSFORM - a word that can be sweet and precious, or a word that contains the unknown, and mystery - a word that implies movement, that means: we are leaving where we are, and moving towards what is ahead.

Who do you become when you are challenged? To transform, you leave a version of yourself behind, or as St. Paul says, ‘put aside the old man.’ How the Lord seeks to transform each of our hearts is so deeply personal; and our current culture is obsessed with this idea of transformation - the ‘glow ups’, the 40 day challenges, the before and after shots. Human anthropology is obsessed with it too: the hero’s journey, Odysseus trying to get home, Paul cast off his horse, great men rising and falling to power and achievement; or leaving power behind to become, in the eyes of the world, small, but a new man.

Who do you become when you are challenged? Where does your journey of transformation begin?

Happy Birthday to Pope John Paul II! Today, we honor him as one of our patrons here at COR.

We strive to emulate the deep love he had for God’s creation and the way he found prayer and peace through the beauty of nature.

“We can pray perfectly when we are out in the mountains or on a lake and we feel at one with nature. Nature speaks for us, or rather speaks to us. We pray perfectly.”
— Pope John Paul II

What saint inspires you:
St. Francis, for his radical trust in God and poverty that allowed him to love others so well.

one moment outdoors where you felt especially close to God:
I often feel close to God during storms, because I become more aware that he is providing for me through the naturally chaotic and overwhelming experience. I love the calm after a storm, when everything is fresh and the birds start singing again, but when I have inner calm during a storm, it speaks to me of Christ's promise: "Behold, I make all things new." This fall, I was in a torrential downpour in the desert with a group of high school girls. I was so grateful for the joy I had; it allowed me to show the girls on the trip with me that everything was going to be okay. It is a gift to be the calm in the storm for my students.

a story of transformation you’ve witnessed:
The first thing that comes to mind is a student a had earlier this spring and the small but beautiful way she faced her fear of heights. Rock climbing was our third activity of the trip involving heights and ropes, and this young woman was still scared, but she climbed up about twenty feet, shaking, and smiling through her fear. I encouraged her to climb a little higher, and she did, and then cheerfully asked to come back down. Other girls on the trip climbed more, but they didn't bear so much fear with so much joy.

How does being outdoors change the way you pray or hear God:
I pray differently because there is so much beauty to see, and also because my students are so present to me. I know that God shares the delight I have in the intricate beauty he has fostered in every rock, lichen, tree, and bird; and I also know he shares the delight and care I have for my students. I love to laugh with my students! I want my laughter to reflect the Father's delight for them.

Favorite piece of gear
My new climbing helmet! The one my friend gave me is a great color 😉 and I love sharing climbing with students.

Ask anyone who has spent a lot of time outside, and I think they’d tell you the same thing: conversations that take place in the wilderness have an otherworldly staying power. Those of us who can’t remember the errand we needed to run today can somehow remember that specific conversation with that specific friend under a sky a specific shade of blue, five years ago, and how hot that coffee was as we laughed and stared at the alpine lake below us, deep in the heart of the mountains.

One of the conversations I’m thinking of that took place under a sky too blue to exist (12,000 feet high in the Wind River Range), happened over hot acidic cups of starbucks instant when my husband (and co-instructor) and I opened a ‘coffee shop’ for the afternoon, and invited course participants to drop by on a rest day’s afternoon. Between naps, fishing, journaling and sunbathing, we had a steady trickle of hearts join us that day. As each person sat and drank, we heard story after story, and question after question - should I leave this job? Should I date this girl? Should I move closer, live farther, try this thing, change my life? Regrettably, we didn’t have all the answers, but I fell more in love with the human heart that day. The Lord’s pursuit of His sons and daughters was so evident - He chooses beauty, community, goodness to break us open - leads us to liminal space, surrounds us with His love in creation, and says: what if you gave it all? What would your life look like then?

A saint inspires you:
St. Hildegard of Bingen inspires me deeply. As a mystic, composer, poet, philosopher, naturalist, and founder, she embodied a life of remarkable breadth and purpose. More than her achievements, I admire how she expressed femininity as something active, creative, and spiritually vital. She wrote profoundly on the role of women in both creation and spiritual life. In that spirit, I strive to work diligently, excel in my field, and remain engaged in my community—while recognizing that my femininity is not incidental, but essential and life-giving in all that I do.

one moment outdoors where you felt especially close to God:
I felt especially close to the Lord in the backcountry on a recent college trip I instructed. It was during Lent, and knowing I would spend much of those forty days in the wilderness, I asked God to help me accept and grow through whatever suffering came. Backcountry life is demanding, but that week, on the river, climbing, hiking, and canyoneering, the Lord made it clear that He was not leaving me in hardship. Instead, it became a time of deep community, prayer, and unexpected joy. In a quiet moment, I felt Him say: your sacrifice is not in vain, and it is not forever. Let me love you. All week, the Lord poured out an unexpected abundance of mercy, giving me far more than I thought I deserved.

Favorite piece of gear:
I’m especially stoked about my goose down gear. My puffy jacket and sleeping bag are easily the best I’ve ever used. When I zip into my jacket or crawl into my sleeping bag, it feels like I can be happy anywhere, no matter how cold, remote, or uncomfortable the setting might be.There’s something hard to beat about down. It’s light, compressible, and incredibly warm, and it turns cold nights into something I actually look forward to. In its own simple way, it makes the backcountry feel a little more like home!
