A Bit of a Warning: Ill be bagging up all my garden mulch this weekend to be buried. Heres why:
We had a very mild winter. Now we are having a mild wet spring. There is an excellent chance that some of the issues we had last spring will appear again. A hard streak in winter or a drier spring would have reduced some problems - but brought out others.
So we may see more earwigs, blister beetles and leaf diseases much like we did last year. Especially leaf diseases. Last year grapes and raspberries were hit hard.
If your plant produces fruit, after you harvest, remove all remaining mulch and leaf litter to bare ground. Bag it up. Prune out all the sick leaves and small branches, place them in a garbage bag, seal and dispose in the trash. The idea is to reduce material that will hold fungal spores or that can become nurseries for bad bacteria and viruses. Get open air and sunshine on the soil and any healthy leaves. Most leaf diseases will not stop production, so dont kill the plant. And these practices will help substantially without chemicals. In most cases, after clean up, new leaves will be fine.
