Pushroot Community Garden

Pushroot Community Garden Promoting having fun in the dirt, and growing some good fruits, veggies and friendships as well!

Pushroot Community Garden's objectives...

To facilitate food security and community involvement: With support of a non-profit relationship with the Lander Care and Share Food Bank, we encourage gardeners to give back to the community by sharing their garden produce, knowledge, and dedication with others. Sustainable gardening techniques: We encourage organic, non-chemical growing techniques to pr

ovide healthy and organic food within healthy organic soil. Education: We intend to provide on-site educational opportunities through partnership with Lights On (an after school program for grades 3rd-6th) to enhance the knowledge of our youth members and engage them in sustainable living practices. Staying local: By fully utilizing Amoretti Park, we provide habitat for backyard wildlife such as bee’s, birds and bats. This is accomplished through native landscaping, xericscaping, and the building and maintaining of bird and bat houses. We also encourage the planting of vegetables and fruits which are native and sustainable in our climate. Common space: From its conception it has been a top priority to designate a gathering space where education, meditation or relaxation is welcomed. This spot is open to all members of the Lander Valley community.

A Bit of a Warning: Ill be bagging up all my garden mulch this weekend to be buried. Heres why:
We had a very mild winter. Now we are having a mild wet spring. There is an excellent chance that some of the issues we had last spring will appear again. A hard streak in winter or a drier spring would have reduced some problems - but brought out others.

So we may see more earwigs, blister beetles and leaf diseases much like we did last year. Especially leaf diseases. Last year grapes and raspberries were hit hard.

If your plant produces fruit, after you harvest, remove all remaining mulch and leaf litter to bare ground. Bag it up. Prune out all the sick leaves and small branches, place them in a garbage bag, seal and dispose in the trash. The idea is to reduce material that will hold fungal spores or that can become nurseries for bad bacteria and viruses. Get open air and sunshine on the soil and any healthy leaves. Most leaf diseases will not stop production, so dont kill the plant. And these practices will help substantially without chemicals. In most cases, after clean up, new leaves will be fine.

It’s not over yet…

Don't let the green grass and trees coming into leaf fool you into thinking that summer is right around the corner...
❄ More SNOW is on the way for the mountains. A period of moderate to heavy snow is possible late this evening across the west, with additional snow expected to fall through the day Thursday. Lower elevations (below 6,000 feet) will see rain, rather than snow, but snow levels may drop as low as 5,000 feet across the western valleys overnight.
🚗Mountain passes are expected to be slick with snowfall, and travel through Yellowstone National Park could be slick and snowy at times this evening through much of the day tomorrow. Be prepared for Winter driving conditions!

It’s that time of year again! It’s time for the C4C giving season! Every year the Lander Community Foundation raises thousands of dollars through its Challenge for Charities. The money you donate to Challenge for Charities is matched dollar for dollar by the Lander Community Foundation. The money goes to help local non profits, all of whom make life in our small town so much more wonderful.
Pushroot Community Garden has benefited tremendously from C4C in past years and the generous support of our many donors means the world to us.

Winter sowing involves planting seeds outdoors in a container during winter. The container safeguards seeds from harsh weather and wildlife, while the exposure to cold temperatures facilitates dormancy breaking. The container serves as an optimal environment for spring germination. Unlock the secrets of nature with winter sowing!

Check out this article from our friends at PennState Extension. It's a fun project for winter: https://extension.psu.edu/starting-seeds-in-winter
