Next week marks the first of this year's public lectures at Wyoming Catholic, but this one will be a bit different than our usual setup. While it is still open to the public (and we hope you will all attend!), it will be held at 6:00PM (rather than the usual 7:30PM start time), and will be hosted by the National Museum of Military Vehicles in Dubois, rather than here in Lander. This will allow our students to take advantage of the free admission to the Museum that is being offered to the public next Friday, in solemn remembrance of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The lecture, "9-11: The Day, The Response and The Human Price," will be delivered by Maj. Gen. Luke Reiner (Ret). Currently serving as Chief of Staff at the Foundation for Infrastructure Resilience, Gen. Reiner served for 36 years in the U.S. Military, with a full half of his career spent engaged in the war started on 9/11.

“For the next four years, you’ll be focusing on the hand tools of learning. Reading, speaking, writing. You will learn to have a conversation. With these tools, you must choose your own words and examine your own assertions. Although a textbook or Sparknotes or ChatGPT would strip away these difficulties, you’ll read the authors themselves and their own words.

“To be a Great Books college is to shout out, ‘The grain matters. It matters, although this work will at times be painfully inefficient.’ This is the natural and proportionate inefficiency of attentive labor and a worthy object. Master these tools and the rest will come easily to you.”

Most Rev. James D. Conley, Lincoln's Bishop (and a member of WCC's Board of Directors, highlights "a wonderful piece on a new edition of an out-of-print book chronicling the rise and fall of the Integrated Humanities Program that flourished at the University of Kansas in the 1970s. This program was the instrument of my own conversion to the Catholic Church, through reading the Great Books. I was honored to write the Foreword to this new edition."

Father Matteo Invernizzi, currently serving at Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Broomfield, CO, was the chaplain for the recent 21-day trip undertaken by a group of young men from the Archdiocese of Denver’s St. John Vianney Theological Seminary. In partnership with WCC’s outreach program, COR Expeditions, he and eleven seminarians spent three weeks in July hiking through Wyoming’s gorgeous Wind River Range. "...so I went to seminary, discerned out after my second year, and then I went to Wyoming Catholic College, in Lander, Wyoming. And that was where I really started flourishing in a new way, personally, intellectually, and spiritually. "

This week, David DiNapoli, President of the Pontifical University of Santa Croce's foundation, sat down with Archdiocese of Denver priest and current Santa Croce student (and WCC alumnus), Fr. Trevor Lontine. "Fr. Trevor first heard the call to the priesthood when he was 15, but it wasn't until his experience in the admissions department at Wyoming Catholic College that he felt affirmed in this vocation as he was helping students discern God's direction for their lives. The former parochial vicar of Spirit of Christ Catholic Community beautifully describes Canon Law as the means by which the treasures Christ entrusted to His Church actually reach His people."

“The mountains are calling, and I must go.”

On Sunday, August 2nd, the members of the Class of 2030 attended early morning Mass at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, grabbed breakfast, circled up with their lead instructors and chaplains for a pre-trip prayer (and group photos), and headed off into the wilderness, where they will spend the next 21 days on the most unusual (and best!) Freshman Orientation program in the country.

Divided into five groups—three of men and two of women—they will "Step into the Real" in a way that few freshmen can, spending the next three weeks trekking through the Wyoming backcountry, climbing 11,000-ft. passes and summiting 13,000-ft. peaks, hiking roughly 100 miles, fly fishing some of the most beautiful lakes in the Rocky Mountains, cooking their own meals, and growing in wonder as they study “God’s First Book.”

Led by a trio of upperclassmen who have fulfilled the instructor coursework and requirements of the College’s own Outdoor Leadership Program and accompanied by a chaplain, the men will work their way through the Teton Wilderness, while the women will spend their time in the College’s own beautiful backyard, the Wind River Mountains. Embracing what the College calls “the most unusual orientation program in the country,” these young men and women will learn more about themselves in these three weeks than many students learn in four years of college.

While most of us are still enjoying our summer, these five SAA graduates are starting off college life at Wyoming Catholic College by going on a 21 day backpacking adventure into the wilderness. Keep them in your prayers!
