Life as a feral cat is hard. We are making a major impact to decrease the number of kittens born into this life in Lander and it would not be possible without our donors. Thank you to all who have given especially during our Challenge for Charities fundraising timeframe (today through July 10!). If you want to make a positive impact on the animals and people most in need in our community, please consider a donation. Any amount helps. https://lander.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create/fund?funit_id=1103

Why are there so many feral cats #4. Surveillance!!!!! Obviously when we see these little monsters we missed a Mom. This Mom chose an unused truck as a whelping box, and a kind fellow showed us where. Now Mom is spayed and will be turned loose as soon as kids are weaned. It’s HARD to find a cat who has NO interest in being found. We rely on reports from neighbors, spend a lot of time snooping around (as any of you who have been accosted by me when I am snooping can attest to). ”Have you seen any cats”? is my refrain. We are proud to report that we have significantly reduced the kitten sightings in the last 5 years. This is our first Lander proper litter this year

Why are there so many feral/street cats #3? Don’t panic!!! This cat is fine! Just waking up from a spay. But if you look closely you will notice she is 3 pounds 7 ounces. This brings me to the 3 R’s of cats. Ridiculous Reproduction Rate. This little kitty was pregnant!!! She is too small to have babies! The worst case scenario is that cats start the reproductive cycle as early as 4 months of age, and have as many as 3 litters a year. Cats go into heat, and if they are not bred, they can go into heat again in as little as a week. No wonder those tom cats are howling!!!!! You can do the math, but things get out of control very quickly.

Why do we return cats after trapping them? Because it's what actually works.

Feral cats are deeply territorial — their home range is their entire survival system. Relocating them means stripping away everything they know, and most will attempt to return on their own, traveling miles through unfamiliar territory and rarely making it safely.

Returning cats to their original location through our Sterile Feral Program (Trap, Neuter, Return) keeps them where they can thrive. Populations stabilize over time, nuisance behaviors reduce, and communities benefit from a healthier, managed colony. Relocation sounds like a solution, but it doesn't work. Returning cats is not giving up — it's the most humane and effective approach we have.

Holy Cats, Lander - We asked, and you didn't just show up, you blew us away! We are so grateful to everyone who came to Paws & Pints last night Pushroot Brewing Company. You all brought a literal truck full of food for the pet pantry at Mr.D's Food Center Inc. You made leashes with which are now available at the pet pantry, Sinks Canyon trailheads, and Wild Iris Mountain Sports. And, we got to watch a puppy from Charlie's Angels Animal Foster find his family! We can't wait til the next one! Mark your calendars for Wednesday, May 13th at Pushroot! And if you'd like to donate to the pet pantry in the meantime, you can always drop a bag at Mr. D's or shop our Chewy wish list here: https://www.chewy.com/g/lander-spay-neuter_b151827293
