Hey , how much will continuing to run the Kingston and Cumberland coal plants cost us? Because scrapping your plans to retire these aging, dirty coal plants AND bringing methane gas powered electricity generation online at the same sites seems expensive to me. đŸ€”

You’ve long said that these coal plants have become costly and less reliable to keep operating. That’s partly why you justified putting pipelines in people’s backyards and building new multi-million dollar gas plants. Now, you’ve cut the public out and broken your commitments. And we still don’t know the price tag because there is no cost transparency.

đŸš«Hardworking people and families shouldn’t have to pay more to keep these expensive plants online when there are more affordable and reliable options.
đŸš«Survivors and families of Kingston coal ash disaster workers deserve better.
đŸš«Nearby communities shouldn’t have to keep suffering from air and water pollution caused by burning dirty coal.
đŸš«Communities across the Tennessee Valley don’t want to risk grid outages during the next winter storm because of reliability problems at these old plants.

This trip was a great opportunity to expand how SAGE TN advocates for environmental justice in the Upper Cumberland. Our communities couldn’t show up to tell their stories and it was an honor to be bring these unique perspectives to our lawmakers in DC.

Wednesday August 20th from 2-4pm, the TVA will be hosting a listening session ahead of their board meeting on the 21st. This listening session will be held at the TVA headquarters in Knoxville, TN . Although, the TVA Board does not have the required headcount to make quorum, right now is an important time to have our voices heard as the TVA faces the existential threat of privatization. Something that they’ve been fighting since their founding, history repeats and it’s our turn to rise to the occasion and hopefully we repeat history by keeping the TVA publicly owned.
