This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the service members whose lives were forever shaped by war, including the physicians, nurses, medics, and medical innovators who cared for them both on and off the battlefield.
Featured in our Military Medicine exhibit is an early 1900s stereoscope, a device used during World War I to test a pilot’s depth perception and binocular vision. By viewing specially designed stereoscopic images, military doctors could evaluate whether pilots possessed the spatial awareness needed for flight, navigation, and combat.
Tools like this remind us that military medicine extends far beyond emergency treatment. From vision testing and rehabilitation to surgical advancements and public health, wartime medicine has profoundly shaped the evolution of healthcare and medical technology.
