Join us at the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum on Friday, October 2 at 6 PM for a fascinating First Friday talk with Rob Jinks, creator of Franklin & Marshall College's Brewing Science course.

The Evolution of B**r: From the Fertile Crescent to That Hazy IPA on Tap at the Bar Around the Corner

B**r has been part of human history for thousands of years, but how did we get from ancient brewing traditions to the countless styles we enjoy today?

Rob will explore the history and science of b**r, following its evolution from the earliest civilizations to the modern craft brewing movement. Along the way, he'll explore how the practice of brewing helped contribute to the development of science and medicine, including our growing understanding of fermentation, microorganisms, and the processes that make b**r possible.

We'll also explore the social, economic, and cultural forces that have shaped b**r throughout history.

Come learn a little history, discover some brewing science, and leave with a new appreciation for the fascinating connections between b**r, science, and medicine!

What did doctors think they knew about infectious disease in 1943?

This Sherman Vaccination Kit offers a fascinating glimpse into the evolving science of disease prevention.

Sherman Laboratories produced polyvalent bacterial vaccines containing multiple killed bacterial strains. These preparations reflected early theories about the role bacteria played in respiratory illnesses and their complications.

But there's an important historical distinction: influenza is caused by a virus, not bacteria. As scientists learned more about viruses and immunity, approaches to influenza prevention changed.

This kit is a reminder that medical science is always evolving. What represents the latest thinking in one generation can be reconsidered as new discoveries change our understanding.
That's one of the things we love about medical history: it doesn't just show us what we know. It shows us how we came to know it.

You may recognize her face, but did you know there's a fascinating story behind it?

Introduced in 1960 by toy maker Åsmund Lærdal and Dr. Peter Safar, Resusci Anne became the world's first medical simulator designed specifically for CPR training. Lærdal's own experience saving his two-year-old son with CPR inspired his commitment to teaching others these lifesaving skills. Resusci Anne's distinctive face was based on L'Inconnue de la Seine, the death mask of an unidentified young woman who reputedly drowned in the Seine in the late 1880s.

Fun Fact: The famous line "Annie, are you OK?" from Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal was inspired by Resusci Anne, as students learned to ask "Annie, are you OK?" while practicing resuscitation on the mannequin.

So the next time you hear "Annie, are you OK?"... you'll know exactly who they're talking about.
