“Every two seconds someone around the world dies from a hunger-related cause (UNICEF).” This quote is what inspired us, Kelsey and Christie, to start 2 Seconds Or Less twelve years ago, on November 11, 2011.

We were two silly kids with a dream of changing the world. It was a dream of using that 2 second silly idea, to make someone else’s 2 seconds better. Or many 2 seconds. Or maybe, many lives.

We bought tickets to Zimbabwe and packed backpacks with no plan. Here’s what unfolded from one “silly idea” and the 12 years of boots on the ground that followed:

⭐️ 10 Community nutrition gardens
⭐️ 3,035 Students fed per day
⭐️ 2,500 Families with new access to clean water
⭐️ 250 Female entrepreneurs supported
⭐️ 180 Local Zimbabwean projects funded and scaled
⭐️ 42 U.S. Student leaders equipped for lives of service
🌟 Countless lives of staff, interns, donors, and volunteers changed by the opportunity to be involved in something bigger than themselves, ourselves included.

We’re tremendously proud of 2 Second Or Less’s legacy. It has shaped us and so many others into who we are today, becoming a permanent part of our DNA. That is why it is deeply emotional for us to share today that it’s time to say goodbye, at least for now.

Operational challenges ranging from COVID-19, to political instability, to developing personal lives of our dedicated staff members have led us to make this difficult decision. We will always leave the possibility open for reestablishing at some point in the future, should the timing become right, and in our hearts we know that while it’s the end of one season, our commitment to caring for the people around us and in Zimbabwe remains unchanged.

At some point we may hold a gathering to commemorate all of 2 Seconds Or Less’s big and little beautiful moments. If you would like to submit a photo or quick recount of something, someone, or an experience that made an impact on your life, please message it to us, or better yet, drop it in the comments below so we can reminisce together and smile at everything that has happened.

We will send personal emails to all of our donors, and we encourage you to visit our website come December where we will list organizations that align with our mission of stopping malnutrition in Zimbabwe. We will divvy out what’s left of our funding to them, and encourage you to do the same. There are some incredible orgs out there on the ground that are transforming communities, and we are so thankful to be able to support them.

Thank you all endlessly for the love, support and memories.

Kusvika tasangana zvakare. Until we meet again.

Two Seconds Or Less, remains committed to improve the livelihoods and
nutrition of vulnerable populations by providing restorative gardens and other agricultural
projects and programs that harvest greater health, wealth, community and overall security for people in rural Zimbabwe.

Since it’s been a minute – I thought I would remind you of who I am, why this matters and what you can do to support our work. Especially since I’m incredibly excited to announce that my role in 2SOL will be changing. (More on that time come). We just hired new Executive Director , and couldn’t be happier to welcome her into this team.

So go ahead and refresh your memory on why we are here, scroll on through this post, and drop a warm welcome to Carrie in the comments below!

Hi! Christie here. While we are passionate about celebrating women every day, this month (and year) has felt like a heavier than normal burden when it comes to being a woman.

When we are in a dark or difficult season, we often scramble to search for moments of hope and light.

I’m thankful to live in a world where women like this exist. People who inspire me, fight against the status quo, use their creativity to change the world… I could go on and on.

But for now, swipe to see some beautiful portraits of Zimbabwean women and hear what they had to say.

We are still seeing Juneteenth posts flooding our feed, and are thanking the algorithm for pushing out the good stuff.

If you didn’t know, this day is a celebration of the journey and freedom of Black Americans— a holiday that should be recognized nationally. It is a day for both reflection and rejoicing.

We want to take this moment to speak on the Black history that is not taught in schools. The Black innovators, creators, and inventors that did not get the recognition that they deserved. We want to celebrate Black culture and amplify Black voices.

We also want to discuss some uncomfortable truths. Too often, any conversation involving race gets swept under the rug because it evokes feelings of guilt, fear, or uncertainty. Thus, we rely on Black communities to talk about, promote and teach us their struggles. And this should NOT be their burden to bear.

This season and beyond let’s truthfully acknowledge the period of time in our history that shaped and still influences our country today. Let us educate ourselves. We have a deeply rooted problem that requires intentionality, action, and commitment. The first step is speaking up. Not just today, but until we are all treated with justice.
We want to share our gratitude for the emancipation but address how far we still need to go as a country.

We will be posting educational resources and shouting out some amazing Black-owned businesses through out July. Send us a DM if there are any specific resources that you’d like to see, and we will try to point you in the right direction.

Did you know that approximately 30% of nonprofits fail to exist after 10 years, and according to Forbes, over half of all nonprofits that are chartered are destined to fail within the first few years? I vividly remember our first two years of existence, excitedly exclaiming how “we will make it,” and never expecting all the hurdles we would have to overcome to be here today.

But… at the end of this year...on November 11th, we will be celebrating our golden BIRTHDAY! YEAR 11! And that’s why this mini campaign 2 Seconds To 10 is so important to us. A celebration throughout the tenth year of our existence.

Wow. A DECADE of impact.. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for the next ten!

🌱What would you like to see in the next ten? Drop some suggestions below! Nothing is too wild!

Prong #2 Entrepreneurship:

We covered education, and now it’s on to entrepreneurship!

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒆𝒑𝒓𝒆𝒏𝒆𝒖𝒓𝒔𝒉𝒊𝒑

Entrepreneurship is vital for community growth! Not only does it have the ability to improve standards of living and create wealth, entrepreneurs also help drive change with innovation, where new and improved products enable new markets to be developed. Plus, entrepreneurship teaches flexibility, creativity, adaptability, and so many other qualities that are important to thriving in life.

With the help of our partner organizations and our field officers on the ground, we ensure continuous support, offering mentorship and small grants throughout the process.

Furthermore, we complete monthly monitoring and evaluation reports to collect data that helps us better serve each recipient with resources that encourage more holistic entrepreneurship. Each person that completes our program will walk away with the ability to adapt, innovate, and grow their passion projects.

🌱Remember how I alluded to an upcoming initiative when we talked about education? Well, entrepreneurship is also a BIG element in this launch… The one project is going to partner some of the most marginalized Zimbabweans with the most affluent to create a mutually beneficial relationship >> any ideas on what’s growing?!

🌱Are you an entrepreneur? Tell us about your small business!

We show our faith by asking ourselves, how can we be more like Jesus?

Like Him, we show our love to all people no matter the circumstances 💛

We aren’t an organization who practices preaching the gospel in a traditional way. We believe in order to work in any country, you must understand it’s history, and many low and middle income countries (which many of you may know as “third world”) have a past where the Bible has been used to colonize their people, destroy their traditions, and in the worst cases, destroy their communities. Furthermore, we’ve seen example upon example of missionaries using manipulation tactics to convert people to their version of “Christianity.” For example, giving food to the hungry when, and only when, a person “publically commits their life to Christ.”

We hope that our unconditional love, desire for deep partnership, and commitment to cultural understanding demonstrates our faith and joy to the masses.

🌱How do you show your faith?

If you’ve been around the 2SOL team for any amount of time, you know that there are three big “E’s” that are pillars in everything we do- education, entrepreneurship, and employment.

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑰𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝑬𝒅𝒖𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

Education is what makes sustainability possible. In the last ten years, we’ve held deep partnerships with agricultural experts, local colleges, and primary schools to provide educational training for our project recipients, who use their new business and farming knowledge to scale their efforts, therefore feeding their families and the communities that surround them.

We know education is the fastest and most effective way to break the cycle of poverty, and our dual focus on homes and at schools creates an environment where more young people have the opportunity to continue their primary/secondary school education. We’ve also been incredibly lucky to have the ability to work in schools and homes specifically because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Students are slowly returning to school, but this year has taught us that having diversification in where and how we serve is incredibly important.

🌱While we haven’t started any NEW projects in Zimbabwean schools in about two years, an opportunity has arisen to get back into schools quite soon, working on a VERY exciting initiative. Can you guess what it is?! I’ll give you a hint(🚙🥬)⬅️.

We believe transformation can only occur when we focus our efforts on depth, rather than breadth. After a few weeks of research, Zimbabwe fell at the top of our list for where we wanted to base 2 Seconds Or Less for so many reasons.

🇿🇼It is an area that has received little aid in the past due to country regulations
🇿🇼Their unemployment rate is amongst the highest in the world due to internal corruption, industrial mismanagement, and hyperinflation
🇿🇼Zimbabwe is a food deficit country with over half of the population experiencing food insecurity
🇿🇼The hospitality, work ethic, and resilience of the Zimbabwean people are unmatched
🇿🇼Zimbabwe is home to one of the wonders of the world, Victoria Falls, which brings massive amounts of tourism to the country, but little economic support feeding into rural communities outside of major tour destinations

In the future, we are open to expanding, but for now, Zimbabwe has our hearts, mind, and our full concentration. Stay tuned as we post more facts about our favorite place in the coming weeks. Do you have any questions about this incredible country? Drop them below!

3 Things You Can Do Today to Help Underrepresented Leaders

1️⃣- Educate yourself! Systemic issues involving marginalized communities both in developing nations and stateside are complex. It is important to do your research on such matters to learn about the experiences systematically oppressed individuals face. Make sure to listen to the communities involved (although don’t expect them to answer all of your questions- THERE IS GOOGLE) and realize you can never truly understand their struggles. But you can always learn more about how to do your part!

2️⃣- Advocate! After doing your research, take what you learned to advocate for others. There are plenty of ways to advocate! Bringing awareness to your friends and family both face-to-face and digitally, voting at every election, supporting organizations that align with your beliefs, reflecting on systems of privilege and oppression, contacting your politicians, signing petitions, volunteering and spending time in your community are all ways you can be an advocate for the underrepresented.

3️⃣- Donate! Arguably the best thing you can do to help others is donate! Donations can take the form of money, resources, or your time! Any donation makes a difference towards leveling the playing field and helps communities rise up against the system that keeps them down.

🌱Visit 2secondsorless.org/donate to help end the cycle of poverty. And check out our story for some other resources on ways to educate, advocate, and donate!

02/08/2022

At 2 Seconds Or Less, we want to uplift and center the voices of those who are often underrepresented and marginalized in rural Zimbabwe. This is why our programs focus on Zimbabwean women and children (as well as young people throughout the states).

But before I go any further… what does underrepresented mean? Underrepresented and marginalized are both challenging terms because they lack the history of systemic oppression. When someone has been “left out,” it’s rarely from their own doing, but more so from the systems that have been put in place by people in power. Language is important to us, and we are still trying to figure out a better way to describe the populations we serve, because we never want to allude to inadequacy. Rather, we’re describing our friends who deserve equitable access and have brilliance to share with our world.

Now- let’s talk about our friends overseas.
The women in Zimbabwe are resilient and powerful. However, gender equity is an issue for the large majority of them, given the socio-cultural practices and traditional attitudes of society. Therefore, many of the challenges that are faced by women in general in a male-dominated society include having limited access to education and employment, as well as problems arising from traditional cultural practices that tend to seclude women from public life.

The children in Zimbabwe are the future. Yet, they face the repercussions of unfavorable economic conditions often leaving them worse off in terms of health, water, and nutrition. Not only are these typically considered basic indicators of well-being and quality of life, it impacts the way children in developing countries receive an education.

🌱 Stay tuned to see why we also have programs that support students in the states, and how you can get involved in our most innovative programs yet (coming at the end of this month)!
