In 1997, second graders at Nitrauer Elementary School in the Manheim Township School District participated in a five-week read-a-thon to raise money for Habitat for Humanity. The students found sponsors to make donations based on the number of books they read. In total, 32 students read 574 books and raised $374.02 for Habitat.

The money that students raised went into Habitat’s Emerald Valley project (you can learn more about Emerald Valley at the 40 Years tab on our website).

Fran McCaffrey, Habitat’s executive director at the time (who was educator for 30 years before coming to Habitat), led the students on a guided tour of a Habitat construction site to show them where their money was going. After the tour, the students surprised McCaffrey with homemade housewarming gifts for the families who would eventually move into the Emerald Valley homes.

Education has always been connected to Habitat’s mission. When families have a stable place to call home, students can have better academic outcomes.

Today, Habitat homebuyer partner families with students can contribute to their family’s sweat equity by earning A’s and B’s in school.

Last May, Habitat homebuyer Estefanye (pictured with her children) hit the required 100 hours of sweat equity needed to match with her future home. And that milestone was even more special because Estefanye’s children’s excellent marks on their report cards helped her get there.

Estefanye, who recently graduated from a local community college phlebotomy program, stresses the importance of lifelong education to her young children.

“I always encourage education,” says Estefanye. “Even when my kids don’t want to go to school, I say ‘Mommy’s got to go to school too.’”

Read about Habitat homebuyer Yousuf's long journey from an Ethiopian refugee camp to Lancaster.

Yousuf (pictured below to the right of Habitat homeowner Sonia at the Lancaster Habitat ReStore) and his family were accepted into Habitat's homeownership program last fall.

He's making progress on his sweat equity hours and is excited to match with his future home. Working alongside the other ReStore volunteers Yousuf sees the spirit of the community in action.

“One hand does not make enough sound, but 10 can make a lot," says Yousuf.

In the meantime, Yousuf is looking forward to better living conditions and more stability in his family's future Habitat home.

“My daughters will be happy. They can sleep in their own bedroom. Right now, they are together in one room,” says Yousuf. “When we have a house, life will change for my kids.”

It's graduation season! So, for this week's post we'd like to take a moment to salute all the students who've volunteered with us over the past 40 years.

Whether they were assembling Habitat "House-in-a-Box" homes for hurricane victims, raising awareness by working on affordable housing-themed school service projects, helping build homes on our construction sites, or supporting our efforts at the Lancaster Habitat ReStore, students have brought passion, curiosity, and energy to Habitat's mission. We hope all our student volunteers learned something new through their work with Habitat and found their time to be meaningful, fun, and educational.

We'd like to say congratulations to the Class of 2026 high school and college graduates! You've helped build brighter futures for so many Habitat families, and we wish you success on all your future endeavors!

Here are some photos of student volunteers throughout the years.

Did you volunteer with Habitat in high school or college? Share thoughts about your experience in the comments!

Meet Stephanie. Stephanie and her children will be moving into one of the five new, affordable homes currently under construction at our Linden Street Build in Columbia.

After a period of housing instability, Stephanie was able to get into Habitat's first-time homebuyer program and is now working to create a brighter future for her family.

“The opportunity that Habitat has given me, is like, saying it’s a blessing doesn’t even explain how I feel,” says Stephanie. “There are no words to explain how I feel given this opportunity. It’s a lot of emotions. So much joy.”
