Fairfield County Heritage Association The FCHA owns the Sherman House and Georgian Museums. It is also the county historical society. We are the Fairfield County historical society.

Our mission is to connect all people to the rich history of Fairfield County. We are a nonprofit organization that operates two exemplary museums in downtown Lancaster, the Sherman House Museum and the Georgian Museum; champions preservation and revitalization; and provides educational programming. The museums are now closed for the season. They will re-open in April, 2023! Policy regarding posts:

This Saturday, September 5 - visit the Sherman House for FREE!
In celebration of the museum's 75th anniversary, tours will be FREE for everyone. We ask that you PLEASE arrive just before the start of one of the tour times: noon, 1pm, 2pm or 3pm.

Saturdays are generally busy at the museum and we will have extra tour guides on hand. We look forward to seeing you there!

Design Unveiled!
The design for this year's rock glass features one of General Sherman's personal designs. Following the Civil War, Sherman designed a flag which was flown at military ceremonies. It featured an eagle with its head turned toward the olive branch grasped in its talons (emphasizing the new peace between the states), a banner with the slogan "e pluribus unum" ("out of many, one"), and thirteen stars hovering above the eagle and the thirteen stars and stripes in the shield on its breast representing the original thirteen colonies.

Each person who attends our "Bourbon at Sherman's" fundraiser receives one of these glasses for free! The glass was designed by FCHA and made by Gay Fad Studios.

Update on parking for Sunday's presentation.
Those who have difficulty walking can be dropped off at the auditorium, but NO cars are permitted to park there due to fire restrictions. However, there is parking very close to the auditorium along the main strip and it's a short walk to the auditorium.

An undated picture of the Lancaster Campgrounds by Tobias Studios. Founded during the Camp Meeting movement of the late 1800s, the Lancaster Camp Ground has gone from a seasonal retreat to a year-round community.

The historic Davis Auditorium has stood near the center of the grounds since 1895! It is a wonderful historic building and the site for an upcoming presentation on Sunday, August 30th at 7pm. Local historian Michael Johnson will be talking about Chief Tarhe and the Wyandot.

Dividing up the burial grounds at present-day Elmwood Cemetery.
From June 2, 1837
This ordinance divided up the newly purchased burial grounds into sections. For those unaware, present-day Elmwood Cemetery was divided by religion (Catholic, Methodist, Baptist) and sold to local churches for their congregation's use. Interestingly, the Presbyterians purchased their own lot on the north edge of the cemetery in 1843. This is why Walnut Street does not line up today. Later, they merged with the rest of the rest of the cemetery.
Other sections were reserved for Lancaster residents, family plots and potters fields.
