We know that strong literacy skills are built not only through instruction, but through moments that help students see reading as something that belongs to them. Lafayette Elementary School created one of those moments during its second annual Book Blast, held as part of the school’s PBIS assemblies.

The morning unfolded through two PBIS assemblies, one for intermediate students and one for primary students. These gatherings are familiar spaces at Lafayette, where students come together to celebrate positive behavior, reinforce shared expectations, and recognize the ways they show up for their school community each day. This year, those celebrations included something students could carry beyond the classroom and into their homes.

In total, 739 books were distributed, ensuring that every student received a book of their own!

Literacy is not separate from school culture. It's part of how we celebrate students, build community, and support lifelong learning. Way to go Lions!

This year’s Fall Fest at Lafayette Elementary School brought together families, students, and staff for an evening that captured the best of the season. From games and crafts to food and music, every corner of the event reflected the joy and connection that define the Lafayette community.

Parents mingled over cups of hot cider while children ran from station to station with their hands full of treats and decorated pumpkins. Teachers and volunteers worked side by side, helping with activities and sharing smiles that stretched well beyond the classroom.

Events like Fall Fest remind us that school is a place of belonging. It’s where families build memories together and where students see their school as an extension of home.

Thank you to the staff, PTO, and volunteers who made this event possible, and to every family who joined in the fun. At Lafayette Elementary, every celebration is a reminder of what we can create when we come together as one community.

“When students are excited about reading, it opens their minds and builds confidence. It reminds me why I love what I do.”

At Lafayette Elementary School, the library is a space where curiosity blossoms, imagination thrives, and the love of learning grows stronger each day. Guiding that growth is Marisol Ramos, Library and Multi-Media paraprofessional, whose compassion and commitment have helped make the library one of the most welcoming and inspiring places in the school, and why she is this week's staff shoutout!

Her dedication has transformed Lafayette’s library into one of the most active in the district. During the 2024–2025 school year, Lafayette Elementary was recognized as the number one school for book circulation, with students checking out more than 17,000 titles. The school was also ranked among the top three for best book returns, a sign that students not only engage with their reading materials but take responsibility for caring for them.

Marisol Ramos is a bridge between stories and students, a source of warmth and inspiration, and a reminder that the love of reading can open endless doors. Through her daily acts of care and her deep belief in the power of books, she continues to make Lafayette a place where learning feels alive and where every student knows that they belong. Thank you for all that you do and all that you are, we appreciate you Marisol!

Save the date! We're excited to introduce our new volunteer program! Join us on Wed. Oct. 1 to learn about the School District of Lancaster Volunteer process.

There are so many different ways you can get involved in SDoL, and we encourage parents and community members to utilize their talents and knowledge by serving as volunteers throughout the District.

SDoL welcomes you to share your time and expertise with our students. We know that we cannot do this work alone, but TOGETHER WE CAN. We celebrate the amazing resources our volunteers bring to our schools and students every day!

For more information and to register, visit the School District of Lancaster website in the comments.

Each year at Lafayette Elementary School, a quiet corner of the building transforms into something bold, meaningful, and entirely student-made. This mural is about collaboration and letting young voices shape how their school tells its story. Now in its tenth year, Lafayette’s annual mural project has become one of the most anticipated traditions at the school anchored by the belief that art can be both personal and collective, both expressive and educational.

This year’s mural centers on a timely and important theme: peace, written in multiple languages and imagined through the lens of graffiti art. The idea emerged from weeks of discussion between Lafayette’s fourth and fifth grade advanced art students, who gather regularly with art teacher Wesley Blymire to brainstorm, research, and ultimately design the mural that will represent their class for years to come.

The inspiration came from the students themselves. What began as an open conversation about how to make this year’s mural feel different from years past turned into a deep creative dive. Students noticed that many murals they saw online looked similar, and they wanted something that stood out. The idea of graffiti art came up, particularly after a student mentioned artists Banksy and that sparked a new direction. Here is the result!

SoWe's Annual Summer Block Party, co-hosted by The Endall Movement and CJ's Hoop for Hope, is back with the annual traditions you’ve come to know and love!

Come and enjoy getting to know dozens of community partners, play sports, water and field games, watch CJ’s Hoops for Hope basketball tournament, play bingo and win cool prizes, play carnival games (like fishbowl and group races), get your face painted, henna art, and a caricature of you and your whole family/big group of friends, eat a delicious, locally-made lunch for FREE and go home with lots of goodies and new connections!

In addition to all the community-bonding fun, just like last year, they want to rally around keeping our streets safe and free from gun violence.

They will have an important time of remembrance of family members and friends who tragically died from gun violence, and also have an Open-Mic time, for community members to share personal pieces (songs, raps, poems, stories) of how gun violence has impacted them.

This is their longest running event and one that our neighbors remember and look forward to all year long!
