It’s been three years since pres pedro had his cronies make us remove our Letterpress Education Center from the campus of Thaddeus Stevens “College” of Technology. Under the guise that the building was needed to help alleviate a projected surge in student enrollment, it was to be part of a building and renovation plan for the entire campus. “As a state-owned and operated institution, Thaddeus Stevens College is a taxpayer-supported entity. To provide good stewardship of those tax dollars, the college needs to make wise choices regarding its properties, investments, and most practical steps for improvements to best serve its student population.” according to the vice president of finance and administration. Lets see how this stewardship of our tax dollars is doing as of August 1, 2025.

- Spotlight on Bowerbox Press -

Since 2021, Val Lucas of Bowerbox Press has been designing new type for letterpress printers. Val’s new decorative designs are offered in small quantities, and she hopes to keep the traditions of typefounding alive for future printers. Her designs are decorative elements that she wanted to include in her printing, and she hopes you'll enjoy using them as well.

The newest design, VWT Primrose, is an 18 point border based on an original design for wood type produced at Virgin Wood Type by Jim Grieshaber. She and Jim worked together to add detail to the design and complement the original wood type. This border can be printed in two colors and joins the collection of nature- and pattern-inspired designs.

Cast at the Sycamore Press and Typefoundry of Jim Walczak in Williamstown, MA, each font is carefully finished, packed, and bundled with a specimen and zine. Jim has taken Val under his wing to learn the engraving and casting processes, and she produces her new type on his Monotype Sorts Caster.

Bowerbox Press will offer new type along with cards, prints, books, calendars, coasters, and more at the 12th annual Lancaster Printers Fair, September 20, from 11 am to 4 pm. Stop by the Al Starr Community Building of the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street, PA, to explore creativity in letterpress, printmaking, screen printing, book arts, and paper-making.

More than 20 accomplished artists from Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Washington D.C. will be there with custom posters, printings, hand-printed cards, memorabilia, handmade paper and artists books along with a range of letterpress equipment and printing supplies.
