Update to all of our benefactors,
Gen. George H. Thomas Camp #19 would again like to thank you and your respective organizations again for your generous donation to this project. We would also like to provide a significant update you in our onsite work, which has continued this month.
Spring 2026 has allowed J.W. Roth Contracting, LLC to complete the straightening and resetting of each of the individual monuments (the photos provide some compare/contrast, but visiting makes it all look so real). We hope to complete the crack repairs and also complete the stabilization the obelisk. Some restoration work is planned on the visible corner, as well as general cleaning to be conducted by the Camp.

Today we commemorated the service and life of Lancaster native, Private John H. Kahl of the Union Army. He served three terms of service, enlisting as a private for nine months from August 2, 1862, with Co. K, 122nd PA Vol Infantry; then for four months from July 11, 1864, with Co. E, 197th PA Vol Infantry; and finally for nine months from March 2, 1865, with Co. K, 77th PA Vol Infantry. After his third enlistment he was honorably discharged with his company on December 6, 1865. We thank all those who attended today.

Weather notwithstanding, Camp #19 approached Park Day 2026 with the commitment to complete the cleaning of the remaining markers in the GAR Plot in Lancaster Cemetery. We cleaned over 30 markers and picked up the surrounding grounds. We also met a couple researching their family history and identifying the marker of their Civil War ancestor. We cleaned that marker as well.

The 2026 work season has begun! J.W. Roth Contracting, LLC has completed the resetting of the surrounding coping. Some restoration work is planned on the visible corner, as well as general cleaning to be conducted by the Camp. This was first undertaking at the family plot. With winter behind us, next, we hope to stabilize and repair the obelisk, then work on the family memorials.

To all of our benefactors,

Gen. George H. Thomas Camp #19 would like to thank you and your respective organizations again for your generous donation to this project. We would also like to update you as to our progress in our fund-raising, and now in our onsite work, which began this month.

Over this period, we have raised nearly 80% of our targeted goal in receipts and/or pledges. Once we passed the 75% threshold, we were able to offer an order for the work to begin.

The work is being scheduled and performed incrementally by J.W. Roth Contracting, LLC. The first undertaking was the resettlement and repair of the coping surrounding the family plot. We hope to stabilize and repair the obelisk before the winter.

237 Steinwehr Ave Gettysburg, PA - Currently Servant’s Olde Thyme photos. At the time of the Battle of Gettysburg the home was owned by George George, a day laborer, and was one of, in not, the last buildings on the road. It served as a hospital area during the battle and is famous for the body of General John Reynolds being taken there on the first day of battle to prepare it for its journey back home to Lancaster. Reportedly, no coffins were to be found and his staff had to settle for a large marble packing crate instead. The box was too short and one end was broken out so the general's body could be laid flat. Also I’ve read that it is highly probable that the home likely is an 18th century build by Alexander Dobbin for his caretakers.
