The Coalition for Healthy Youth was founded to identify community needs and resources, promoting greater collaboration, and bringing research-based prevention and intervention services to our county's youth. The goals of the Coalition are to:

1) reduce substance abuse among youth in Lancaster County and, over time, among adults by addressing the factors in our community that increase the risk of

substance abuse and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse;

2) establish and strengthen collaboration among Lancaster County’s private nonprofit agencies, and Federal, State and local governments to support the efforts of community coalitions to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth.

The dangers of underage drinking are serious, but parental support is a powerful counter-balance.

By keeping lines of communication open and building trust, you empower your child to make healthier choices.

Your presence is their biggest advantage.

It’s not just one reason β€” it’s a combination of influences that can make va**ng seem normal, appealing, and low-risk.

β€’ Advertising β€” V**e products are widely promoted across social media and in stores, often designed to look trendy and harmless

β€’ Flavors β€” Sweet flavors can mask the harshness of ni****ne and are a major reason youth start

β€’ Social influence β€” Many teens try va**ng because someone they know uses it

β€’ Ni****ne β€” Ni****ne can hijack the developing brain, leading to cravings and dependence

So what can we do?

βœ”οΈ Start conversations early β€” before it becomes an issue

βœ”οΈ Ask open-ended questions that help you understand their perspective

βœ”οΈ Create a safe, judgment-free space so youth feel comfortable talking openly

βœ”οΈ Be clear about your values and expectations around substance use

βœ”οΈ Stay informed so you can recognize the risks

Small conversations can make a big difference.
