We would like to acknowledge our fearless and dedicated volunteer Lloyd Zeager. After completing Voluntary Service in Washington DC, he set out to major in History at Goshen College. He was recruited by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and has been with us ever since, on staff for 50 years and now a volunteer. He is often found sorting books for the Book Auctions and Bookworm Frolic. His laugh is unmistakable and is a treasure of knowledge. Thank you Lloyd, for 50 wonderful years!

This year, as the United States commemorates the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Mennonite Life continues to feature often-untold stories of migration, political dissent, service, and faith and to identify how voices from local communities have shaped the nation’s character.

This painted dowry chest was made in 1792 for Elizabeth Hess of Lancaster County.
Chests like this held the clothing and household goods a young woman brought into marriage. Inside the lid is an unexpected fraktur drawing of a man on horseback labeled “This is a Irish men that sits on this Horse February the 19 Day 1795.”

Even in the early years of the United States, Mennonite families lived alongside Pennsylvania German and Scotch-Irish neighbors. Objects like this show how local communities and identities were already mixing and shaping early American life.

Who doesn't love a good cup of warm tea?

Did you know the Mennonite Visitors Center sells fairly traded products from our partner Ten Thousand Villages? A product highlight is the Meow Mug, handcrafted from Nepal. The Meow Mug is an engobe ceramic piece featuring a removable lid with kitty ears for steeping tea and a meowy cute cat face on the front.

Sana Hastakala, which means "small handicraft" in Nepali, is a nongovernmental, nonprofit export organization based in Kathmandu. Sana Hastakala works to preserve the rich artistic skill and traditions of Nepali artisans, and provides additional training and marketing assistance to artisans. Eighty percent of the artisans are women; most artisans are uneducated. Ten Thousand Villages has purchased products from Sana Hastakala since 2001.

You can physically purchase the Meow Mug at our Visitors Center or our online shop at https://lmhs-book-and-museum-store.myshopify.com/collections/fair-trade-ten-thousand-villages/products/copy-of-mug-polka-dot-stoneware-pink

Thanks to everyone who came out to our Author Talk with Jenny Gehman last week as she read excerpts from her book, Little Life Words. It was a delightful gathering where people could refresh their soul and hear wonderful stories of Jenny's life and journeys. Attendees also shared what words God has used to impact their lives.

We encourage you to stop by the Mennonite Visitors Center to pick up your copy of Jenny's book and discover the treasures within it.

"The Home was a progressive venture, dedicated to caring for the needy and homeless children long before the establishment of state welfare agencies and public assistant programs. The Home predated the Lancaster County Children's Bureau by more than forty-five years."

Nancy Witmer wrote the history of the Mennonite Children's Home of Millersville in 1984. The Children's Home was constructed in 1911. Today, the grounds are home to Immerse International (formerly the Millersville International House). With a dedicated staff, they welcome international students and immigrants from all over the world, providing English-language teaching, student housing, and large garden plots.

Today, Mennonite Life staff held a volunteer day working in their Prayer Garden; weeding and mulching to make sure guests and residents could have a safe place to pray and find peace.

You can learn more about the wonderful work at Immerse International at: https://www.immerse-us.com/
