Today is World Scout Day, observed on February 22 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts movement. It is a day for Scouts worldwide to celebrate their shared beliefs, reflect on their achievements, and recommit to the aims of Scouting.

EAGLES in the NFL today.

These NFL players grew up in an era in which youth sports is almost a full-time job, and they were all able to advance to Eagle Scout.

Today's story.

On this day, July 17, in 1939, 12-year-old Donn Fendler became separated from his family during a storm near the summit of Maine's Mount Katahdin. His disappearance captured national attention, leading to a large-scale search involving hundreds of volunteers. Fendler survived for 9 days without food or proper clothing before eventually finding his way out of the woods. He did so by following a stream and telephone line, eventually stumbling upon a hunting camp 35 miles from where he had disappeared. Despite being dehydrated, covered with insect bites, and 16 pounds lighter, he was otherwise unharmed. Fendler credited his survival to skills learned as a Boy Scout, including following the stream downhill, foraging for food, and staying warm during cold nights.

In 1978, he wrote a best-selling book titled "Lost On A Mountain In Maine," which became required reading for fourth-graders in Maine.

Hello Alumnus,

As you may know, we celebrated the Boy Scouts of America’s 112th birthday on February 8th. Since our founding, more than 130 million young boys and girls have participated in our Scouting program and learned the values of patriotism, courage, and self-reliance.

U.S. Representative Glenn “GT” Thompson spoke on the House floor in celebration of our organization’s birthday, so I wanted to share with you the video clip of his speech. You can watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrVWN65yHcQ

I’ve also included a couple of quotes from Rep. Thompson and Rep. Bishop below if you’re interested in reading more about the impact of BSA!

“I’ve been involved in Scouting for more than 50 years and I’ve witnessed first-hand the important principles, values, and lessons that are imparted upon young people and last a lifetime,” Rep. Thompson said. “The Boy Scouts of America has played a pivotal role in shaping the leaders of tomorrow and I am honored to offer a resolution commemorating the organization’s birthday.”

“No organization has done more to build leadership and character in America’s youth than the Boy Scouts of America,” Rep. Bishop said. “Successive generations of boys, and now girls, who have promised to do their duty to God and country, to obey the scout law, to help other people at all times, to keep physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight, are the essence of what has made America great. As one whose life has been impacted by Scouting, I am proud to join Congressman Glenn Thompson in honoring and celebrating the noble character and spirit of this great organization.”

None of this would be possible without the support of donors and alumni like you. Once again, thank you for supporting BSA and the millions of children our organization has impacted.

Yours in Scouting,

Boy Scouts of America Alumni Society
