What does it mean to be ALICE in Fairfield County?

Join United Way of Fairfield County for The Missing Middle: Hidden in Plain Sight — an engaging conference exploring the realities facing ALICE households and individuals experiencing poverty in our community.

ALICE households are working hard every day, yet often struggle to afford essentials like housing, transportation, childcare, healthcare, and food.

Through presentations and conversations with community and professional leaders, attendees will explore:

• The hidden challenges faced by ALICE households
• How poverty impacts families, workplaces, health, education, and community stability
• Practical ways to reduce barriers and create pathways to opportunity
• How we can build greater empathy, understanding, and solutions together

In 1995, Dolly Parton started mailing books to children in her home county to inspire children to love reading in honor of her dad, who couldn’t read or write.

That idea lives here too. Every month, 6000 children in Fairfield County find a book in the mailbox — because of neighbors who fund it, volunteers who run it, and a woman from Sevier County, TN who started it all.

Dolly Parton gave the world songs people knew by heart.

Through her Imagination Library, she also gave millions of children something to hold in their hands: a book of their own.

What began as the idea of mailing a free, age-appropriate book to a child every month grew into a global movement helping children discover the joy of reading from the very beginning.

Since 2009, United Way has been proud to help carry that vision into communities, partnering with Dolly Parton's Imagination Library so more children could grow up with books of their own.

Dolly’s work showed how something as simple as a book could open a door to possibility. Her generosity and belief in children have helped shape generations of young readers.

We honor Dolly’s remarkable life, her friendship with United Way and the generations of young readers whose lives will continue to be shaped by the stories she helped place in their hands. Thank you, Dolly. ❤️

United Way of Fairfield County is proud to serve as a drop‑off location for Birthday Bag donations. Each year, our community comes together to help children experiencing food insecurity celebrate with a cake, candles, and a few special touches.

Through local food pantries, Birthday Bags give families the opportunity to create joyful birthday moments during what can often be a difficult time. 💙💛

Want to help? Consider hosting a Birthday Bag or supply drive at your workplace, organization, church, or business—or share this collection with your friends, family, staff, volunteers, and followers!

Items needed to assemble Birthday Bags:
• Boxed cake mix
• Can of soda (to replace eggs and oil)
• Container of frosting
• Birthday candles
• Disposable cake pan
• Birthday plates and napkins
• Birthday decorations
• Small birthday gift or toy
• Birthday card

We’re launching a virtual Split‑the‑Pot fundraiser to support the ALICE families who make our community run — and we need YOUR help to make a difference.

ALICE stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed — our childcare workers, medical assistants, cashiers, home health aides, servers, and so many others who work hard every day but still struggle to afford basic essentials. They earn too much to qualify for assistance, but not enough to make ends meet.

💡 That’s 35% of Fairfield County.
These are our neighbors, coworkers, and friends — and together, we can show them they’re not alone.
