This weekend, Scouts from Pack 93 joined over 3,800 Scouts, leaders, families, reenactors, and staff at Shadows of 1864 Camporee! As part of this event, our Cub Scouts enlisted as Union Soldiers as part of Company 3D and they learned so much about life during the Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg, plus had a ton of fun with other Scouts from all over south central Pennsylvania and beyond!
Some of the things our Scouts did:
-Slept overnight in a tent
-Got to see a demonstration of cannons being fired
-Saw how infantry prepared for battle
-Made butter
-Made candles
-Branded their drilling mock rifles
-Learned how to march like soldiers during the civil war
-Heard about Civil War medicine and got to learn how they made bandages
-Learned how they kept soldiers fed during the war
-Explored a barn that was used as a hospital during the actual Battle of Gettysburg
-Explored a Civil War campsite
-Tried to stay on inflatable horses (definitely not ready for the real thing!)
-Roasted marshmallows and made s'mores
-Drank root beer floats
-Participated in a parade
-Learned about Civil War music and tried instruments
-Found out why we say "hit the hay" when you go to sleep, and learned that hay beds are NOT that comfortable
-Finished a busy day with a great fireworks display
Thank you for an awesome weekend! Can't wait for the next big event!
