Memorial Day weekend brings many time-honored traditions; from raising flags to installing memorial decorations and from BBQs to pool times; it is a weekend for remembering and celebrating. In keeping with the theme of remembering and celebration, the Lamoni Alumni Association hosts its annual all-school reunion each Memorial Day weekend.
Alumni weekend provides a chance for those who attended Lamoni Schools, along with their loved ones, to return to campus. Alumni were given the chance to once again walk the halls through semi-guided tours, peruse the Alumni Association brick garden, see
the many improvements to the school grounds the last few years and, most importantly, it provides an opportunity to reconnect with fellow alumni.
The Alumni Banquet was held Saturday night with a delicious meal catered by Lizzieโs Kitchen. MC for the night and Alumni Board President, Mike Morris, kicked off the night recognizing Lorene Waugh, Class of 1941, as the oldest living LHS Alumni as well as
recognizing Gary and Mary Ellen Silver of the class of 1953 as the longest tenured almuni in physical attendance. Speaker Tracy Bridge gave a wonderful talk on โLessons Learned Growing Up in Lamoniโ and attendees were also well entertained by the musical stylings of Laura Benedict and the Soul Sirens. The banquet was well-attended and had an impressive turnout for the 50 year honor group, LHS class of 1976. A group of around 40 alumni from this class of โ76 were in town for a special weekend of reminiscing and fun. A raffle of Lamoni memorabilia, benefitting the scholarship fund, rounded out the evening.
Sunday morning a free will donation breakfast featuring Larry Waughโs famous made from scratch donuts gave a chance for some final time to socialize in the high school commons.
In a Facebook post about the event Linda Perkins, Alumni Association Vice President, said โI would encourage all Lamoni Community Schools graduates to join the Lamoni Alumni Association. The connections you make (or are making now) can last a lifetime through this association! Thank you to all Alumni Association members for the work you do!โ
The Alumni Board would like to recognize and thank the newest members of the Board, Kimberly (Parkhurst) Lame, Randi Elliot, Amanda (Beaty) Crandall, and Karen McFarland. Another special thank you to board member Raphael Coulthard for all the help in setting up the gym and for arranging the use of the new stage for the banquet.
As a reminder if you are an alumni of Lamoni Schools, please keep your physical mailing address or email updated with the Alumni Association so you can continue to receive the annual newsletter in your preferred digital or physical format.
Until next year, โHats off to Thee!โ
