As a reminder, this is the best time of year to begin a native grass and forb restoration. Preperation and planning are essential. Now is the time to spray fescue, as it prepares for its winter dormacy. This picture represents many properties in SW MO and SE KS with a monoculture of fescue. Stayed tuned in the months to come as we return this property to its near original state with Native Warm Season Grasses (NWSG) and forbs. Contact us if you have questions or would like to get started on the process of fescue conversion.

Today, my assistant wildlife manager in training helped me plant native warm season grass. It's a little early, but we are trying to get grass in place before things get wet. Native Warm Season Grass (NWSG) and forbs are excellent wildlife habitat and one of the main reasons for planting where we are this week is for erosion control. The river has been brutal to this crop field, creating a huge gully. We plan to slow down the loss of valuable top soil.

I will be ordering apple trees in the next few weeks. These trees produce late ripening fruit, providing additional food late in October and early November. Trees are 7-9' tall and are in a 3 gallon pots. Cost is $36 per tree. Contact me if you are interested.

Fall food plot finished for another landowner. Can't wait to see what wildlife are attracted to this mix. I have tried 2 varieties of the same mix and the exclusion cages are in place.

Pictures are before native grass was planted in May (5/15/15) around my 4 acre clover plot, and after (8/30/15). The native grass and forbs are coming on strong. We have had an awesome summer for establishing native plants and I am amazed at how the forbs have taken off as well. The butterfly w**d is doing the trick. There were many butterflies present yesterday as we worked and planted our 1acre plot (3rd pic). I am anxious to see what this youth season, next weekend, has in store for my boys.

Have you ever considered planting fruit trees for wildlife? Fall is the best time to plant trees. I will be ordering a variety of apple trees next month. The fruit on these trees do not ripen until late October, offering additional food during the hunting season. Contact us for pricing and let us help you enhance your wildlife habitat.

As you start to prepare and plan for your fall food plot, making sure you choose the right seed can be the difference between a successful and failed plot. One thing you need to consider is the amount of cheap filler seed and inert matter present in your seed mixture. The amount of actual viable seed in some companies mixtures might shock you. This requires you to buy more seed to plant the same amount of acreage. I have done some research and I am going to do 2 trial plots with 2 different seed mixtures to see which mixture the deer prefer. The mixtures I am using are
1. Real World's Wildlife Seeds Harvest Salad
2. Kincaid Seed Company
I will be purchasing these mixtures this week and if you are interested in purchasing them as well I would be happy to pick it up for you.
