Did you know...Blue Jay feathers are actually brown? They appear bright blue to the human eye due to structural coloration. Tiny air pockets in the feather's structure act like a prism, scattering blue light back to your eyes. If you backlight the feather or crush it, the blue disappears, revealing the dark brown melanin pigment underneath. Wonderful, isn't it?

Camera Trap Tuesday! 📸
Have you ever joined a Mule Deer tea party? Wildlife cameras do not only allow us to see what animal is where, but also gives us a glimpse into their behavior when humans aren't around. They are just chillin' in this case!

Did you know that Southern Plains Land Trust only has four staff members? Together they are responsible for everything from feeding bison, fixing water tanks, surveying ferrets, bats, plants, fundraising, grant proposals, event organization and anything that comes with protecting the prairie! We are lucky to now have two seasonal field assistant, and this is one of them! 🤩

"I'm Anthony, I grew up in New Jersey and studied Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University. While there I worked for the laboratory of wildlife conservation and management doing work with all kinds of animals and landscapes across the state of New Jersey. I have worked in New Mexico doing land management on a ranch and most recently for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife monitoring mule deer in the Serra Nevada's. I'm really excited to work for SPLT helping to restore and maintain the amazing prairie habitat and the wildlife found there. Particularly the American Bison!"

Thank you for helping us, Anthony!

*Squeal* Can they be any cuter? 🥹

Prairie dog pups are doing their thing, being cute, all over the prairie now! Have you already seen and admired them this year? Research shows that prairie dog colonies act as natural firebreaks. By extensively clipping surrounding vegetation to spot predators and clearing the ground for their burrows, these keystone species reduce fuel loads.

Southern Plains Land Trust now has two seasonal field assistants! Klara is one of our new 'Rewilding technicians' (on the left):
"I'm Klara and I grew up moving all over the country, but I'll say I'm from Texas! I studied Environmental Science at Carleton College in Minnesota, where I also did a lot of landscape restoration work. I spent two years in the Peace Corps in rural southern Paraguay, learning a ton more about botany, agroforestry systems, and how old ladies make their best meat stews. For the past year, I've been doing seasonal work in Colorado & Wyoming surveying birds and their habitats, with my wee pup Billie by my side! I'm so excited to be a part of the diverse & impactful rewilding and restoration work SPLT does; living on and with this huge expanse of open prairies and working to better it every day is the dream."

Thanks for helping us restore the prairie, Klara! Stay tuned for more updates from our Rewilding Techs!

"He's going the distance, he's going for speed." -The Distance, Cake

Pronghorn, antilocapra americana, are the fastest land animal in North America and second fastest in the world. They are capable of reaching speeds of up to 60 mph! Their speed is a holdover from an evolutionary arms race with the extinct North American cheetah during the Pleistocene Epoch (2.58 million to 11,700 years ago). They have multiple different adaptations for sustained speed, including enlarged windpipe, heart, and lungs comparable to body size for increased oxygen intake and circulation.
