9-3-20 I heard of the Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge, and I thought I can do this. On 2-7-23 I submitted my application. They only accepted 100 new riders every 2 years so hopefully I get my application in in time. 2 months later I get my 1st of 2 phone call interviews on the 2nd I’m told that my number is #1155. On 8-4-24 the challenge begins, riding from Daytona to Homer Alaska in 14 days! Then the preparation begins! Lots of riding in any type of weather, rain ,snow , wind, dirt, day & night. Sleeping next to my steel horse figuring out what works & what don’t work. Lights, gotta see lots of lights, test this try that. Lots of research food, bedding, water, what works for one guy may not work for me. 7-29-24 I set out for Florida my bike is loaded with Tent, tarp, bag chair, sleeping bag & my day bag. (I was way overpacked) meetings all week long then the last meeting where every rider received their own numbered #1155 Hoka Hey challenge coin. The next day we ride at 6am. 8-4-24, 5am their is a prayer, then we were “saged” Line up you get you directions now! 5:45 we are handed our directions get them mounted. 6am their challenge has begun. We’re headed towards Key West & hurricane Debby!
A hurricane, tropical storm , rain about every day, get up at 4am ride til 11:30 for the next 12 days & 10,000 miles later Homer Alaska!
225 riders started 165 finished several were in crashes several quit, I was hit by a van 300 miles from the finish line. I crossed the finish line on a wrecked bike on day 12 in 62nd spot.
Overall it was an awesome experience, it will make you dig deep inside yourself & see what your made of. I’d do it again!
I am officially a Hoka Hey Motorcycle Challenge
Elite Finiser. #1155
