At the Everwild office, we went out to do what was supposed to be a quick weeding session in our front yard native garden... and got completely distracted in the best way! Right there on a common milkweed plant were tiny monarch eggs! 🦋

They were so small we almost missed them, but once you see them, you can’t unsee them! Suddenly the “chores” turned into a full-on celebration. 🎉

It felt like the garden was letting us in on a secret. Like, “Hey, thanks for the weeding… also, I’m busy hosting the next generation of monarchs.” We left the weeds a little less important and the milkweed a little more sacred. Definitely one of those moments that makes all the dirt-under-the-nails work worth it!

✨Do you want to join in on magical moments like this? Join our garden volunteers that help maintain the native garden outside of our office. Please complete the volunteer interest form at: chautauquawatershed.org/volunteer ✨

Recently, staff members Carol Markham and Bethany O’Hagan celebrated the 60th Conservation Day with Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County at LCLC (Lake Chautauqua Lutheran Center). They spent the morning teaching fifth graders from Chautauqua County the importance of wildflowers and how to make them into balls which they took home to plant.

It was so much fun getting our hands dirty and sharing actual seeds and seeds of knowledge with local students.

Director of Development Justina Dore and Director of Conservation Twan Leenders enjoyed a fun weekend at the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage - Allegany State Park, a must for nature lovers. 🌳💚🌳

Justina deepened community connections, joined inspiring programs, and soaked up the park’s beauty. Twan led two hands-on sessions about our region’s salamanders, reaching nearly 100 curious visitors of all ages.🦎

If you haven’t been, be sure to mark your calendar for next summer. It’s the perfect way to learn about local ecosystems and meet fellow nature fans. We hope to see you there!

We joined fellow nature organizations, Roger Tory Peterson Institute and Audubon Community Nature Center, for a meeting of the minds. We all set aside the morning to prioritize getting to know each other at the staff level and shared operational struggles and successes in break out sessions.

Thank you RTPI for hosting. We look forward to future collaborations across our organizations and within the community!

Thank you Buffalo Bat Habitat and the licensed wildlife rehabilitators that cared for several Big Brown Bats that were recently released at Bentley Nature Preserve. These bats were all taken in over the winter months. None of them were injured. They just got lost in an attic or crawlspace and couldn't be released outside due to the frozen conditions. Now that temperatures are above 55*F, they can be released to help manage insect populations in local ecosystems.

(These releases were conducted under the supervision of wildlife experts licensed to do this work in NYS. No one should ever handle a wild animal unless they are trained and authorized to do so.)

Native red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) may look like a cluster of tiny hanging bells, and to hummingbirds, those are dinner bells.
🔔🍽🔔

The red, tubular, nectar-rich flowers are beautifully adapted for hummingbird pollination. The long nectar spurs match a hummingbird’s slender bill and extendable tongue, allowing these birds to access the sweet reward while transferring pollen from flower to flower.

This coevolved relationship beautifully illustrates how native plants, birds, and pollinators evolve together - each shaping, supporting, and relying on the other. It’s one more reason native plants deserve a place in our landscapes: they nourish not just beauty, but entire ecological communities.
