🚴‍♂️ Troop 212 Takes on 55 Miles! 🚴‍♀️

55 miles of adventure, effort, and a whole lot of determination.

Our Scouts set out along the San Gabriel River Trail, heading north to the Whittier Narrows Dam before looping down the Rio Hondo River Trail and connecting into the Los Angeles River Trail. We regrouped and refueled at Hollydale Regional Park, then pushed on to Rainbow Harbor, earning those ocean views. From there, we rolled across Alamitos Bay and through Belmont Shore before heading back up the river to close the loop.

The ride had it all:
🔧 Flat tires (handled trailside like pros)
🌳 A water break at Bosque del Río Hondo
⛪ A visit near the original San Gabriel Mission site
🏎️ Took in the sound of cars drifting at the Long Beach Grand Prix
🍦 Popsicles at Belmont Shore Beach

After 9 hours in the saddle, the biggest takeaway was not just the mileage, it was the teamwork, resilience, and positive attitude from start to finish.

Big congrats to all who completed the ride, and to those who earned their Cycling Merit Badge along the way.

55 miles. One unforgettable ride. 💪🚴‍♂️

🚴‍♂️ Troop 212 Bike to Breakfast Adventure! 🚴‍♀️

What a ride! Troop 212 hit the road for an awesome Bike to Breakfast outing, combining skills, safety, and some well-earned burritos.

The morning kicked off with a full bike equipment and safety check, with scout leaders making sure every rider was road-ready. From there, Scouts sharpened their skills with cone drills and maneuvering practice, building confidence before heading out.

Next up was real-world riding. Scouts practiced on-street biking along Carson Street, including navigating traffic and making safe left turns, key skills for any cyclist.

Then came the main event, a 7-mile ride down the San Gabriel River Bike Trail to River’s End Park in Seal Beach. After putting in the miles, everyone refueled with breakfast burritos, well deserved, before hopping back on their bikes for the 7-mile return trip.

This outing was a huge success for both new and experienced Scouts, offering a great mix of training and adventure.

đź’Ş A special shoutout to the Scouts working on their Cycling Merit Badge. Some went the extra mile, literally, riding an additional 10 miles to Belmont Pier, bringing their total to 25 miles for the day. Over the course of the month, they are working toward an impressive 150 miles of cycling.

Great effort, great energy, and great teamwork all around.

Troop 212 Hits the San Gabriel Mountains!

This past weekend, our scouts embarked on an epic backpacking adventure!

The younger crew tackled 3.3 miles to Spruce Grove Trail Camp from Chantry Flat Trailhead (6.6 miles total for the weekend), climbing nearly 400 feet and proving they’re up for the challenge!

The advanced group went full explorer mode. Dropped at Shortcut Saddle Trailhead along Highway 2, they hiked nearly 10 miles to their campsite (18 miles total for the weekend), climbed almost 2,000 feet, navigated rough terrain, dodged fallen trees, and even took a wet shortcut along the West Fork of the San Gabriel River. Along the way, they used paper maps and compasses and practiced triangulating their locations. Talk about a true adventure!

By Sunday late morning, both groups reunited at Spruce Grove Camp and hiked out together, sharing stories, laughs, and memories of the mountains.

Adventure, teamwork, and a little bit of tired muscles. Troop 212 knows how to make it happen!

What an incredible Scout Sunday with Troop 212 at Lakewood First United Methodist Church!

Our Scouts kicked off the day by cooking and serving pancakes at the breakfast fundraiser, then served as ushers during the church service, and helped celebrate our sponsor organization with a special display of 70+ years of scouting memorabilia.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating community, service, and scouting tradition!

🚨 Future Eagle Alert! 🦅

Troop 212 just wrapped up another awesome Eagle Project, and it’s worth celebrating!

The project at Lakewood First United Methodist Church included refreshed front planters, brand-new rose bushes, w**d barrier installation, fresh mulch, new solar lights, a front entry lights replacement, and lots of hard work from a dedicated team.

Way to show leadership, service, and Scout spirit in action. Another step closer to Eagle—well done!

What a night for Troop 212. At the Long Beach Area Council Recognition Dinner on January 15, 2026, we celebrated two major milestones: Troop 212’s 186th Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster John Douglas’s 60th year of service to Scouting.

John began his Scouting journey by joining a troop in 1966, later joining Troop 212 in 1986, and serving as Scoutmaster since 1995. Over that time, he has guided 132 Scouts to Eagle and built a truly Scout-led troop grounded in leadership, service, and character. His lasting impact is seen in the confidence, integrity, and lifelong leadership of generations of Scouts.

Thank you, John, for 60 years of dedication and mentorship. Troop 212 is stronger because of you.

Troop 212 took adventure to new heights as we continued our High Adventure program at Joshua Tree National Park’s Indian Cove Campground. With the help of the Long Beach Area Council COPE & Climbing team, Scouts and parents spent the weekend climbing and rappelling up and down the rock face. From first-time climbers to confident rappellers, everyone pushed their limits, supported one another, and had an absolute blast. A huge thank-you to the COPE team for making this unforgettable experience possible.

Colorado River Canoe Trip
Troop 212 wrapped up an epic year with a five-day canoe trip down the Colorado River, bringing together scouts, parents, adult leaders, and alumni parents and scouts. The crew planned, packed, and distributed all gear across the canoes, then put in the work each day on the water. They camped along the river, building skills, teamwork, and lasting memories. A strong finish to a great year and a reminder of what Scouting is all about.
