Trousdale built his 444 Lakewood Gardens homes in the area bounded by Lakewood Blvd, Ashworth St, Hayter Ave, and South St, in what was then the city of Bellflower. Every home had 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a fireplace. There were 7 models, all priced from $10,400 to $10,600. At the corner of Lakewood Boulevard and Ashworth Street Mr. Trousdale built a clubhouse and a small swimming pool for use
by the residents during the construction and sales period. At this time Lakewood Gardens was surrounded by dairies, alfalfa, and bean fields and was considered by many to be "out in the country". Upon completion of the project, Mr. Trousdale gave the residents the choice of owning and operating the clubhouse and facilities or deeding it over to the County of Los Angeles. A meeting of the residents resulted in the decision to retain the property and to operate it as a non-profit corporation. The necessary papers were drawn and on January 1, 1948, the "Lakewood Gardens Civic Association" was formed as a non-profit corporation, operated by elected representatives and volunteers. has continued to exist through the labor, love, and time and talent of member volunteers. Upon completion of the homes to the south and southeast of the Gardens, a move was made to incorporate the City of Lakewood. The residents of this area felt that it would be in the best interests for all to join the incorporation movement and they worked diligently to bring it about. In 1952 we became a part of the City of Lakewood, but still retained our individuality by remaining Lakewood Gardens. The first mayor of Lakewood, Angelo Iacoboni, was a resident-member of Lakewood Gardens Civic Association. Membership has always been on an optional basis, with a small initiation fee, plus monthly dues and a great deal of effort on the part of those who volunteer to keep it functioning. We are a unique community. Our Clubhouse and swimming pool have proven to be a gift to treasure. A newsletter called the “Bulletin” has been continuously published on a weekly basis, to keep all residents informed of current activities in the Gardens and to make public service announcements regarding activities in the surrounding area. Swimming is probably the most important activity during the summer months, with a certified lifeguard on duty during the summer, with swimming lessons available to members. Other activities might include potlucks, card parties, pancake breakfasts, dinners for special occasions, fundraisers of one sort or another and civic meetings. LGCA has always relied heavily on volunteers to donate their time and talents, so as to keep the cost low enough for anyone to participate. There is always a place for someone who wishes to help.
