October is National Pedestrian Safety Month. Sidewalks are for people. Keep them clear!

Vehicles parked on sidewalks or blocking the pedestrian path across driveways can force people walking, using wheelchairs or mobility aids, and pushing strollers into the roadway to get around.

Parking, deliveries, and home improvement projects can present challenges, but they shouldn't come at the expense of safe, accessible pedestrian routes. Everyone should be able to use the sidewalk without having to navigate around a vehicle or enter traffic.

See a vehicle blocking the sidewalk? Report it to Lakewood Police through the non-emergency line at 216-521-6773. Reporting an obstruction helps make the LPD aware of the problem so it can be addressed.

This National Pedestrian Safety Month, let's work together to keep sidewalks accessible and streets safer for everyone.

A look at school arrival and dismissal traffic in front of Lakewood High School at Franklin & Robinwood:

This morning between 7–8 a.m., seven people on bikes were observed using the eastbound bike lane on Franklin, but 10 drivers waiting to enter the school driveway were observed blocking this lane (and usually the crosswalk as well). Meanwhile, multiple drivers used the center two-way left-turn lane to bypass the queue of right-turning vehicles, and ten drivers turned left into the school driveway, which is a prohibited movement at that hour.

Yesterday at 2:49 p.m.—11 minutes before dismissal—7 drivers were parked in the bike lane waiting for school to let out.

A bike lane is a designated space for people riding bikes, not overflow space for school traffic. When a driver stops or drives into this space, it forces people on bikes into live traffic. When crossing the bike lane, drivers must yield to people using the lane before proceeding.

This intersection and the entire stretch of Franklin between Bunts and Blossom Park deserve a closer look as part of planning for school arrival and dismissal.

Bust out those costumes for our third annual Spooky Social Ride! We start at Kauffman pavilion with our ending destination being Plank Road Tavern. Bring your friends, helmets, and bike lights!

Ride is 16 miles, but we will stop at Plank just shy of 5 miles to give anyone interested an opportunity to finish their ride then.
PLEASE NOTE: The second part of the ride will go down into the Metroparks. There will be hills that may be challenging for some ability levels, so be prepared and plan accordingly.

What a beautiful day for Kidical Mass!

Beat Cycles led the ride from Madison Park—with an extra-long route through the Bird Town neighborhood, since today's group was mostly older and more experienced riders—and provided the post-ride doughnuts.

While everyone enjoyed their treat, Miss Emily was there with the Book Bike for storytime and a chance for riders to choose a free book to take home. Seeing families arrive by bike, ride together, and then browse for their next book is pretty much our idea of a perfect morning.

Thanks to everyone who came out and made today's ride such a fun one.

The last Kidical Mass ride of 2026 will be October 25, starting and ending at a Lakewood park near the bandstand. It's weather dependent, so make sure you check the Beat Cycles page for the most up-to-date information!

What’s the best part of your route to school?

This morning was a brisk 57° and sunny—and along the way, there was time to stop and admire one of Lakewood’s many little treasures.

A tiny garden. A cabinet full of curiosities. Painted rocks waiting to be discovered, and little treasures to take or leave behind. A small front yard turned into a space that invites people to slow down, look around, and interact with their neighbors.
These are the things that can make a walk or bike ride through our city feel special. ❤️

It's Hike & Bike Week, so we're taking a look at what biking to school actually looks like in Lakewood.

Hilliard and Franklin has a bike lane that runs adjacent to or near three of our schools: Harding Middle School, Grant Elementary School, and Lakewood High School. But one thing we've noticed is that the people we see using this bike lane tend to be adults or older teens. We rarely see younger students or families riding here.

This morning, between 8–9 a.m., a Bike Lakewood volunteer observed traffic at the Hilliard and Elmwood intersection and documented more than 40 instances of drivers entering the bike lane to get around vehicles waiting to turn north onto Elmwood.

For someone riding a bike, that means the space designated for bicycle travel isn't a space they can count on remaining clear.

That's an important part of Safe Routes to School: it's not enough to have a bike lane on the map. The route also has to feel usable and comfortable for the people we're asking to use it.

What a ride!

Twenty-seven Roosevelt students and family members came out yesterday to learn, practice their riding skills, and ride together to Madison Park.

Before we headed out, we practiced the ABC Quick Check, talked about riding safely in traffic and in a large group, and learned how to properly fit a helmet.

After that, it was time to ride! Along the two-mile route, students practiced:
• Riding on the right side of the road
• Signaling turns and stops
• Stopping at stop signs
• Riding together as a group

We were also joined by three Lakewood neighborhood police officers riding their own bikes, who helped make the ride a safe and welcoming experience for everyone.

And after all that riding, the Roosevelt PTA had popsicles waiting for us at Madison Park!

A huge thank-you to everyone who helped make this event happen—and especially to the students and families who came out and rode with us. We hope this is the first of many opportunities for Lakewood kids and families to build their confidence and make biking part of their everyday lives.
