Colorado Open Lands

Colorado Open Lands Colorado Headwaters Land Trust is now a part of Colorado Open Lands These landscapes are the areas that the land trust is working hard to protect.

The impressive fact that the Colorado River, the mother of western rivers, begins in our county — as do several of its headwater tributaries, including the threatened Fraser River — in many ways defines Grand County. These rivers and streams of the Colorado River headwaters have created the scenic valleys that are such a critical component to the landscapes that draw residents and visitors here. I

n recent years, the Upper Colorado River Corridor, which includes the Colorado River and its tributaries in Grand County, has been identified by state, regional and national conservation organizations as the top Colorado Priority Landscape in need of protection. American Rivers, an organization dedicated to protecting U.S. waterways, recently released their annual list of endangered rivers naming the Colorado River as the most endangered river in the nation due to outdated water management, increased drought and overuse. As a land conservation organization, we feel a sense of responsibility to do our part to protect these rivers and the spectacular valleys and scenic views they’ve created. "The release states that the merger is important because Grand County’s population is expected to grow quickly over the next 25 years. The Colorado River and its tributaries, such as the Blue and Fraser rivers, are also facing challenges because of resource overload, population growth and a changing climate.

Together, the two organizations will help bring more resources to Grand County. By combining the community connections held by Colorado Headwaters Land Trust with the expertise of a statewide organization like Colorado Open Lands, the pace of protecting land in a fast-growing community will speed up, the release states."

Colorado Headwaters Land Trust will be merging with Colorado Open Lands, which is a statewide land trust based out of Lakewood, according to a joint news release. The release states that the two organizations have...

We were thrilled to participate in this year's National Public Lands Day! We partnered with the Town of Hot Sulphur Springs to remove nearly a mile of barbed-wire fence from the Jones Creek Ranch Conservation Easement (aka Himebaugh Gulch), with six great volunteers!
