We know that the past few weeks have been incredibly heavy for our community. Trying to return to regular routines after a profound loss is never easy. 🩵

Grief doesn’t have a timeline. Often, the days following a tragedy can feel the most difficult as the initial shock wears off. If you, your children, or someone you know is struggling to navigate these big emotions, please know you do not have to carry this weight of grief alone.

NJ4S Compass Ocean County is here to walk beside our local students and families. Our services are always completely free of charge.

Our doors and hearts are open to provide:
👉 Compassionate Clinical Support: Safe, confidential spaces for students to process grief, sadness, and trauma.
👉 Evidence-Based Small Group Programs: Tools and guidance to help students and schools support one another.

There is no right or wrong way to process loss, but there is always a safe place to turn.

🩵We are here for you. Please reach out to us today if we can support you or your family in any way.https://heyor.ca/4KgHm0

Happy first day of Pride Month! 🌈 Today, we kick off a month dedicated to celebrating identity, but also to recognizing our collective responsibility to protect one another.

Every single day, LGBTQ+ youth navigate a world that can feel incredibly hostile and overwhelming. In fact, research indicates they are more than four times as likely to attempt su***de compared to their peers. However, immense hope exists, and the solution begins at home. According to data from The Trevor Project, having a strong, supportive family network cuts that risk by more than half. Love and acceptance are not just comforting concepts—they are literal lifelines.

Parents, families, and caregivers hold the power to insulate and protect their children. You can provide vital, life-affirming support by establishing a safe and welcoming home environment, advocating for their rights within the school system, and ensuring access to respectful healthcare that honors their identity. 🏡🏫🩺

This Pride Month, and every month, our NJ4S Compass team is working to create safe and inclusive environments to help our local youth gain the experiences and skills they need to thrive. 🧭🤝

Celebrating Pride goes far beyond attending parades; it is about committing to a world where every single LGBTQ+ young person feels safe, loved, and seen.

Please share this post on your timeline today to show your Pride and help us spread this life-saving message of love and acceptance across our community. 🖤

✨ "Some children need to move their body before their mind can settle enough to learn." ✨

If you’ve ever told a child to “sit still and listen,” only to watch them squirm more, here is the scientific truth: Movement isn't a distraction from learning; it is often the prerequisite. 🧠💡

🏃‍♂️ The Body-Mind Connection
Some kids require physical input to regulate their nervous systems. Bouncing, tapping, or spinning isn't defiance. It is an intuitive effort to organize their sensory systems so they can actually focus.

🧠 Why Regulation Matters
True learning requires a regulated mind. When a child feels safe and physically grounded, the "thinking" part of the brain (the prefrontal cortex) can process info, retain memory, and solve problems.

💡The Stress Response: When a child is stressed or forced into rigid stillness, the brain enters a fight-or-flight state. In times of stress, the ability to learn is lost as the brain prioritizes survival over schoolwork.

🎉 Quick "Body Engaging Brain Breaks" to Try:
- Animal Walks: Crab-walking or bear-crawling sends calming sensory feedback to joints and muscles.
- 1-Minute Dance Party: Shake out excess energy to a favorite song. x2 speed for some silliness.
- Wall Pushes: Push flat against a wall for 10 seconds to release tension.

Behind the scenes, 3 in 4 high school students are carrying the weight of childhood adversity.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs)—such as abuse, neglect, or household instability—leave a lasting footprint on a child's biology. These aren't just "difficult memories"; they are community-wide public health emergencies. Research shows that a high cumulative dose of childhood trauma doubles adult risks for cancer and heart disease, and increases lifetime su***de risk by 1,200%.

But adversity is not destiny. We can completely rewrite a young person's trajectory by surrounding them with Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs), which act as a powerful biological buffer against toxic stress.

A child is drastically more likely to heal and thrive into adulthood when they:
✨ Feel safe sharing their feelings at home.
✨ Have at least 2 non-parent adults who take a genuine interest in them (like teachers, coaches, or mentors).
✨ Feel a deep sense of belonging at school.
✨ Feel supported by friends and connected to community traditions.

We cannot always prevent the storm, but we can absolutely build the shelter.

To help build that safety net right here in our community, we are currently booking our Summer Programs. We are bringing evidence-based mental health education, practical co-regulation tools, and trauma-informed parenting support directly to local community groups, summer camps, and parenting networks.

☀️ Bring our team to your group: Head to the link in the comments below to submit a request for our FREE services dedicated to supporting Ocean County students and families. Let's work together to make sure no school or community group faces these challenges without support.

🧭 Pass it on: Share this post with a parent, educator, or community member who is working hard to be one of those life-changing "trusted adults" for a child. Together, we can build the safety net our youth deserve. 🤍

Marty was out doing what he does best: bringing comfort, smiles, and a sense of calm to local Ocean County students.

Talking about mental health and navigating big emotions isn't always easy for kids, but a little canine comfort goes a long way. While the students learned about emotional wellness, Marty was right there on standby for heavy-duty snuggles and quiet support.

Sometimes, the best way to open up and find your calm is with a reassuring paw by your side. 🐶❤️ Little Egg Harbor School District PTO of Little Egg Harbor, Inc. Robert C. Wood Early Childhood Center

When a child has a meltdown, throws a toy, or collapses into tears, it’s easy to label it "bad behavior." Clinically speaking, however, you’re witnessing a biological SOS🚨

Because a child’s prefrontal cortex is still developing, they lack the neurological ability to calm themselves down on their own. They don't need a lecture or a punishment—they need a Safe Adult.

Where to start when big feelings arise?

🧭 Be their anchor: Soften your posture and keep your voice low to signal safety.
🧭 Validate before you correct: Name the feeling and give them the words for their experience ("You wanted the red cup, you're so disappointed").
🧭 Offer your calm: Sit with them quietly, model calm breathing, or offer a hug. By loaning them your adult nervous system's calm, you help them soothe. Over time, this consistent co-regulation is exactly how they build the neural pathways to eventually regulate on their own.

Finding your own calm in the middle of a child's storm is incredibly hard work, and you don’t have to figure it out alone. 🤍

We are currently booking our Summer Programs to bring mental health education, practical tools, and parenting support to local community groups, summer events, and parenting networks.
