Colorado politicians are once again targeting workers’ wages through SB26-193. This bill would allow the State of Colorado to exempt itself from local minimum wage laws, meaning a private employer in a city like Denver would still have to pay Denver’s minimum wage but the state government located in Denver would not. Cities adopted higher minimum wages because workers are struggling with skyrocketing rent, groceries, healthcare, and the cost of living. Instead of strengthening those protections, lawmakers are carving them back.

Workers have seen this pattern before. Last year, politicians weakened minimum wage gains for tipped workers through HB25-1208. Now they are coming after state workers through SB26-193. A Democratic majority means very little if lawmakers continue siding with corporate interests and austerity politics over the people who actually keep this state running.
