Here are the facts…
My daughter is 8 years old, nonverbal, and has autism. Her school, the ACES program (for students with autism) at Barnegat Township, assigned her a 1:1 paraprofessional to support and protect her.
Instead, this staff member used blue painter’s tape to bind her wrists, ankles, and mouth shut. Photos were taken of her in this condition and shared in a group chat with three other staff members.
The New Jersey Institutional Abuse Investigation Unit (IAIU) stepped in to conduct their investigation. They deem this to not be abuse or neglect. Additionally, this was brought to the Ocean County Prosecutors office and they declined pressing charges.
There are two photos of my daughter, in two different outfits, indicating this occurred more than once. These images are currently under a protective order the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.
My daughter was not the only child affected. Another student in her class was also taped, and there is a photo of that incident as well, which is also under a protective order.
When I learned what happened, I was devastated. I was told this was “just a joke.” The prosecutor declined to press charges.
This is not a joke. This is abuse.
This is not only about my daughter—it is about every child with a disability who cannot speak up for themselves.
