I pulled my daughter out to protect her.

What came next was another fight.

After everything that happened, I made the decision no parent should have to make—I removed V from the A.C.E.S program, part of the Barnegat Township School District that was supposed to keep her safe. Instead of support, our sending district, Lakewood Township School District, changed course and suddenly decided they could serve her in-district.

That decision opened the door to months of obstacles.

IEP meetings became battles. Communication broke down. I was silenced in meetings that were supposed to center around my child.

The result?
10 hours a week of home instruction.
No speech therapy. No occupational therapy. No physical therapy. No compensation for everything she missed.

So I stepped in.

I scheduled and drove her to every therapy myself to prevent regression. I took a leave from work to make it happen. For 6 months, my daughter—who thrives on routine—was out of a full school day.

And it showed.

The progress she fought so hard for started slipping away. The crying came back. The screaming. The hitting, biting, scratching.

This is what disruption does to a child who depends on consistency.

But we didn’t give up.

We found a new school. Close to home. A fresh start.

And now? She’s finding her voice.
Her language is emerging. She’s making meaningful progress again. Anyone who knows her can see the difference.

But the truth is—we still live with the impact of what happened. Every single day.

We are healing. We are rebuilding. And we are not going anywhere.

We are fighters. And we will never stop fighting for her.

Here are the facts…

My daughter is 8 years old, nonverbal, and has autism. Her school, the ACES program (for students with autism) at Barnegat Township, assigned her a 1:1 paraprofessional to support and protect her.
Instead, this staff member used blue painter’s tape to bind her wrists, ankles, and mouth shut. Photos were taken of her in this condition and shared in a group chat with three other staff members.

The New Jersey Institutional Abuse Investigation Unit (IAIU) stepped in to conduct their investigation. They deem this to not be abuse or neglect. Additionally, this was brought to the Ocean County Prosecutors office and they declined pressing charges.

There are two photos of my daughter, in two different outfits, indicating this occurred more than once. These images are currently under a protective order the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

My daughter was not the only child affected. Another student in her class was also taped, and there is a photo of that incident as well, which is also under a protective order.

When I learned what happened, I was devastated. I was told this was “just a joke.” The prosecutor declined to press charges.
This is not a joke. This is abuse.
This is not only about my daughter—it is about every child with a disability who cannot speak up for themselves.
