FVA and the story behind IT.
Fishing Veterans of America was founded by Steven Dwight of Roseburg, OR in 2016. It was Steven’s dream to serve our veterans suffering from TBI/PTSD through Oregon fishing adventures. Do to unforeseen circumstances after having just getting started, he could no longer pursue his dream.
It was around about the same time that Steven got a phone call from a man living in a small country town, Clinton TN, Larry Bainum. Larry is a type 2 diabetic who had lost his first leg to amputation just a few months prior. The men spoke to one another about what it meant to them to be able to serve our vets and how cool it would be to serve the handicapable community. Larry and Steven stayed in touch with one another for some time. Larry had complications and a second above the knee amputation. Now after a year later and having double above the knee amputations, Larry’s deepest desire is to help others. It was that passion that led Larry to leave his home in Tennessee to move to Oregon on his own... without legs...all in hopes to be able to serve others.
Picture yourself on the edge of a stunning Oregon river gripping the rod in your hands as you prepare to make your first cast. You and your peers imagine you'll be the one to catch the biggest fish of the day. The thought of sitting around a campfire later that night with all your new friends with the widest smile you've worn in years upon your face makes you want to stretch out, chuckle, and gloat on about your achievement. After realizing you've been daydreaming at the edge for a minute, you send your line into the water and land the smallest of guppies. Truth is, size doesn't matter - it’s the story that makes the fish and the fire they are told around that build life changing moments. FVA is dedicated to providing moments where dreams and reality collide to change lives forever.
At FVA, we know not everyone likes to fish, and we want to provide those memorable moments to all those we serve. Fishing is what got us started. What keeps us going is a conglomerate of extreme sports including, but not limited to: surfing, sailing, snowboarding, paragliding, skydiving, and backpacking. FVA is actively seeking the input from men and women we serve on new ways to lift and empower.
