Taking verses from the Bible at a surface level only, is like taking a drink from a pool meant for swimming in.
It’s easy to stop at the first thought that the words of the Bible bring up within you. Easier still to move on to the next verse, instead of sitting in the full weight of what you just read. We know; it’s tempting for us too.
But Scripture isn’t a collection of basic truths and instagram bios. The verses we’ve been memorizing since we were young often have an asterisk we’ve been missing, or quite frankly, ignoring. “Love one another” Jesus said over feet He knew would walk away. “Go into all the nations” was a sending, not a slogan.
Going deeper isn’t always comfortable. The verses we love start asking things of us we didn’t sign up for. “Love your enemies” stops being beautiful and starts being specific: the coworker, the ex, the family member you’ve been avoiding. “Take up your cross” stops being poetic and starts costing something.
This is where Scripture actually meets us. Not in the shallow end, but in the deep; where our feet can’t touch and we have to trust the One who wrote it.
Let’s go deeper.
