⚡A Superhero Basket for a Superhero Girl
Seven-year-old Emery from Escondido should have been thinking about recess, friends, and what to draw next — not hospital rooms and monitors.
But last week, Emery was admitted to Rady Children's Hospital with pneumonia, Influenza A, and painful oral thrush. What started as a tough illness quickly became overwhelming. She was so sick she couldn’t eat for an entire week. To help her body heal and get the nutrition she desperately needed, doctors placed an NG tube.
For a little girl who should have been running and laughing, it was a lot to carry. That’s when Scarlet’s Kids Foundation stepped in.
Last Thursday, my daughter Scarlet and I personally walked through those hospital doors carrying something a little different than medications and monitors — a very large superhero gift basket made just for Emery.
Inside were dolls, fidgets, books, erasers, signs, stickers, paints, stuffed animals, a new shirt, playing cards, and even a special teddy bear with a hidden pocket — a tiny place to keep treasures, notes, or brave little secrets. It wasn’t just a basket of toys. It was a reminder:
You are still a kid.
You are still brave.
You are still stronger than this moment.
We handed the basket to her sweet mom, hoping it would bring light into a heavy week. And it did.
Today, we’re celebrating something beautiful — Emery is now drinking her Pediasure on her own and is back at school.
From NG tubes to the classroom in just days.
From hospital monitors to morning attendance.
This is why Scarlet’s Kids exists — to bring comfort, distraction, and hope to children facing medical challenges, and to remind families they are not alone in the hardest moments.
Way to go, Emery. Your superhero strength was there all along. 💕
