ChildFund has begun distributing more than 400 goats to 60 vulnerable households across 30 communities in Ribáuè and Zavala districts, made possible through the Gift of Love and Hope (GOLAH) initiative.

Using a sustainable pass-on (trespasse) model, families receive goats and, in turn, pass on offspring to other pre-selected households. This creates a ripple effect of opportunity, extending benefits far beyond the initial recipients and strengthening entire communities.

But the support goes beyond livestock. Participating families have been trained in goat husbandry, animal health, disease prevention, breeding, pasture management, feed conservation, and livestock shelter construction, equipping them with the knowledge needed to build sustainable livelihoods.

By prioritizing vulnerable households, including women-headed families and those facing food insecurity, this initiative is helping families improve nutrition, increase household income, strengthen resilience, and create brighter futures for their children.

This International Children's Day, ChildFund joined partners and communities in both Zavala District, Inhambane Province, and Maputo City to celebrate the joy, rights, and potential of every child.

In Zavala, 390 children participated in literacy and numeracy competitions, poetry, music, dance, and child-led advocacy activities that amplified their voices and promoted their rights. Meanwhile, at Escolinha das Mahotas in Maputo, children enjoyed a day of recreation and learning through relay races, sack races, painting, musical chairs, and other interactive games that encouraged creativity, teamwork, and self-expression.

Together with our partners, local leaders, caregivers, and educators, we reaffirm our commitment to creating safe, nurturing environments where every child can grow, dream, and reach their full potential.

Happy Children's Day to all children in Mozambique

As communities in Maputo and Gaza recover from the recent floods, ChildFund continues mobilizing support for vulnerable children and families affected across both provinces.

Through this effort, ChildFund has secured a generous Gift-in-Kind donation of 6,000 hygiene and dignity kits from Heart to Heart International. Each kit contains essential items including bath soap, sanitary pads, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and towels ; helping families maintain hygiene, health, and dignity during recovery.

Today, ChildFund, government authorities, and partners officially launched the distribution campaign in Maputo, reaching 153 beneficiaries in Bairro 3 de Fevereiro and Bairro Ferroviário in KaMavota District. The distribution will continue throughout May and June across additional communities in Maputo and Matola before expanding into Gaza Province.

INGD has welcomed the support, recognizing its importance in improving hygiene and wellbeing for affected children and families.
ChildFund Country Manager Harrison Ruben shared:
“With this donation, we aim to help reduce preventable diseases and promote a more dignified life for children. We are finalizing the logistics with INGD and our partner Reencontro, and we will soon proceed to Gaza.”

This response has also been made possible through the support of Barnfonden and the wider ChildFund Alliance network.

In Mozambique, many young people complete Grade 12 only to face an uncertain future , with limited access to jobs, further education, or practical opportunities.
At ChildFund, we see this not just as a gap, but as a call to action. We are intentionally investing in young people in Maputo and Inhambane ; equipping them with the skills, tools, and support systems they need to transition from learning to earning.
Through our vocational training programmes, young people especially girls and those from vulnerable backgrounds are gaining hands-on skills in areas such as electrical installation, aligned to real market demand.
But what sets ChildFund apart is our whole-of-youth approach.
We go beyond training to ensure young people are truly set up for success:
✔ We connect skills development to local market opportunities
✔ We provide startup tools and equipment to kickstart self-employment
✔ We partner with technical institutions and the private sector to open pathways to jobs
✔ We prioritise inclusion — ensuring no young person is left behind
✔ We invest in mentorship, leadership development, and awareness on GBV and child protection

In Mozambique, the start of a child’s learning journey is often delayed before it even begins.
Only about 3–4% of children aged 3–5 are enrolled in pre-primary education.
This means most children begin primary school without the foundational skills they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
Additionally, only 39% of children aged 2–5 are developmentally on track in areas such as learning, health, and overall well-being.
This is more than an education gap , it is an inequality that shapes children’s futures from their earliest years.
At ChildFund, we are responding by strengthening Early Childhood Development (ECD) through community-based kindergartens in Maputo and Inhambane.
These centres provide
• Safe and stimulating early learning environments
• Access to pre-school for children from vulnerable households
• Opportunities for children to develop cognitive, social, and emotional skills
• Community-driven solutions that strengthen local ownership and sustainability
By investing in community kindergartens today, we are helping to reduce inequality, strengthen education systems, and build a stronger foundation for lifelong learning.

ChildFund, together with our partner Reencontro and government authorities, handed over two renovated classrooms at Escola Básica de Laulane in Maputo—creating a safer learning space for more than 350 children every year.

We also supported 310 flood-affected children in Kamavota District with school supplies so they can return to school and continue learning.

Together, we’re helping children get back to class and build brighter futures.

On International Women's Day, we celebrate the strength, leadership, and resilience of women and girls in the communities we serve. 💜
Through the work of ChildFund women are not only caregivers — they are educators, entrepreneurs, advocates, and powerful drivers of change for children’s futures.
When we invest in women, we uplift families, strengthen communities, and create brighter opportunities for every child.
Today, we honor the women who lead, nurture, and inspire change every day.

As the start of the school year has been delayed due to the recent floods in the Maputo region, we are reminded that children’s dreams do not pause for crises.
In Bairro Ferreiro, one of the affected communities, we met Alen, a 7-year-old from Maputo whose family was displaced by the floods. This year, he is expected to begin Grade 2. Despite the disruption, he continues to hold firmly to his dream of learning.
In the accommodation centre, Alen spends his spare time practicing how to write his name and drawing. With a bright smile, he shares:
“I like to study. I can’t wait to go back to school, meet my friends, learn and play.”
Alen’s story reminds us that education is more than classrooms and textbooks. It represents hope, stability, and a sense of normalcy for children during emergencies. Establishing safe and complementary learning spaces during crises is essential to protect children’s wellbeing, prevent learning loss, and support emotional recovery.
As families rebuild their lives, ChildFund remains committed to ensuring that children like Alen can continue learning — even in the most challenging circumstances.
🤝 Together, we can help children stay on track, safeguard their future, and transform resilience into opportunity.
