What happens when children no longer have to leave the classroom to look for water?

They have more time to learn.

They have better conditions for hygiene.

And their school becomes a healthier, safer place to grow.
Last week in Mausse, Mandlakazi District, Gaza, we celebrated the handover of a new water source to Eduardo Mondlane Complete Primary School; a milestone that goes far beyond the construction of a borehole.

Through the “Uma Escola Daqui com Água Potável para a Criança” project, ChildFund, in partnership with Banco Comercial e de Investimentos (BCI), has brought safe water closer to approximately 375 students, while also benefiting families in surrounding communities.

The District Administrator of Mandlakazi, Eceu Muianga, captured the significance of the intervention:

“From now on, students will no longer need to leave classes to look for water in distant places.”

Behind this milestone is also the dedicated work of Associação Reencontro-Gaza, which supported implementation at community level and helped ensure that the intervention responded to local needs.

And this is just the beginning.

This is the first infrastructure completed through the ChildFund; BCI partnership, which will support the drilling of four boreholes in schools and communities across Gaza, Inhambane and Nampula—with the potential to directly benefit more than 2,000 children and 3,000 community members.

Because water changes more than what flows from a tap. It changes what becomes possible.

A child who has safe water at school can spend more time learning.
A school with better WASH facilities becomes a healthier place for children.

And when partners invest together, the benefits reach beyond the school gates and into the wider community.

Safe water. Better learning conditions. Healthier communities. More opportunities for children.

The first years of life are more than a time for play, they are when children begin to discover who they are, understand the world around them, build relationships, and develop the skills they will carry into the future.
That is why preschool education matters.

At ChildFund, we believe every child deserves a strong and safe start. We work with communities and partners to expand access to early childhood education and improve preschool and early childhood development centres, creating spaces where children can learn, play, explore, feel safe, and thrive.

What happens when learning moves beyond the classroom and into the community? Meaningful connections are made, knowledge is shared, and families gain practical tools to support children to thrive.

At Escolinha das Mahotas in Hulene B, a learning visit supported by TIKA (Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency), in coordination with ChildFund and Associação Reencontro, brought together 12 students from Türkiye to learn firsthand about efforts to promote children’s well-being and development.

For more than 10 years, the preschool has provided a safe and nurturing environment for around 55 children, combining early learning with meals and care that support their development.

The visit also created an opportunity to discuss child protection and the importance of safe, welcoming environments for every child.

The highlight was a nutrition education and culinary demonstration attended by 63 mothers and 21 children. Participants explored the importance of breastfeeding and a diverse, nutritious diet during early childhood, while learning how locally available and affordable ingredients can be turned into healthy meals.

From carrot, coconut, banana and sweet potato porridges to a traditional Turkish pudding prepared by the visiting students, the session brought together cultures, knowledge and practical solutions around one shared goal: giving children a healthier start in life.

As participant Mónica shared:

“I learned how to make coconut and sweet potato porridge. Now my baby will grow healthier, and I won’t spend much to feed him.”
This is the power of community learning: simple knowledge can translate into everyday action, and everyday action can shape healthier futures for children.

In different communities where ChildFund implements its projects, one scenario has become increasingly common: parents and caregivers sitting side by side, learning, sharing experiences, and discovering new ways to support their children’s growth.

Over the years, ChildFund has promoted awareness sessions, community dialogues, and learning moments that strengthen the family’s role in the holistic development of children.

More than participants, parents become agents of change, bringing home knowledge that contributes to better nutrition, protection, health, learning, and well-being for children.

When parents actively participate in their children’s lives, every conversation becomes an opportunity for learning, every game strengthens development, and every gesture of affection builds confidence for the future.

More than providing food and shelter, being present means listening, encouraging, protecting, and accompanying each stage of growth. Children who grow up in an environment of affection and family participation have greater opportunities to develop their full potential.

What happens when communities have a stronger voice in the health decisions that affect their lives? Better, more responsive solutions can emerge.

As part of the MUAVULUXE Project, funded by the la Caixa Foundation, 15 community actors in Nacala Porto came together for a Training on Community Participatory Governance.

The participants included health committee representatives, traditional birth attendants, local leaders, co-management committees, and community groups.

The training was not just about sharing knowledge. It focused on building practical skills to make health services more participatory, transparent, and accountable.

Participants explored practical ways to:
• Gather and use community feedback
• Monitor the quality and responsiveness of health services
• Use the Community Scorecard to strengthen dialogue between communities and health providers
• Create stronger pathways for communities to participate in health-related decisions

At the heart of this work is a simple principle: people should have a meaningful voice in the services designed to meet their needs.

By strengthening collaboration between communities, health facilities, and local authorities, MUAVULUXE is contributing to maternal, neonatal, and child health services that are more responsive, inclusive, and sustainable.

ChildFund was pleased to welcome the leadership of Millennium BIM for a strategic engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the private sector and civil society to advance sustainable development for children, families and communities across Mozambique.

The conversation explored opportunities to work together in three key areas:
• Education: creating stronger opportunities for children to learn and thrive.
• Financial Literacy: equipping young people and families with knowledge and skills to make informed financial decisions.
• Youth Skills: preparing young people with practical skills for future jobs and livelihoods.

The meeting brought together Chege Ngugi, Africa Regional Director; Victor Koyi, Country Director; and Harrisson Ruben, Country Manager, alongside Dr. Januário Valente, Executive Director, and Dr.ª Christine Ramela, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility, representing Millennium BIM.

At the heart of the discussion was a shared belief: lasting development is built through partnerships that bring together resources, expertise and a commitment to meaningful change.

As Dr. Januário Valente noted:
“Banks and NGOs need to come together to co-create innovative solutions for the communities we serve because that is where our employees come from, and where their children live.”

Dr.ª Christine Ramela highlighted why this investment matters:
“When communities have a healthy environment and quality schools, our employees and our future clients are better served.”

For ChildFund, partnerships with the private sector are an important pathway to reaching more children and communities with sustainable solutions.

As Chege Ngugi, Africa Regional Director, emphasized:

“NGOs can help the private sector achieve its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitments through collaborative action.”

He also underscored that ChildFund’s ambition to reach 100 million children and community members by 2030 will require strong partnerships and the resources to turn shared ambitions into lasting impact.

Our engagement with Millennium BIM is a step towards building that kind of partnership in Mozambique, connecting business expertise, community knowledge and development experience around shared priorities.

Almost one year after the inauguration of the library at Hulene A Basic School, the impact of this investment continues to transform the daily lives of hundreds of children.

What was once a new infrastructure is today a lively space for learning, reading, and discovery. Built with the support of ChildFund and its implementing partner, Associação Reencontro, the library remains in excellent condition and continues to be used daily by the students.

The benches built in the school courtyard have also become spaces for gathering, studying, and sharing knowledge.

What is most gratifying, however, is seeing the sense of belonging created among the students. With words of gratitude, the students reaffirm their commitment to continue caring for and preserving the library, recognizing that these infrastructures represent an opportunity for their present and their future.

Student Sheide expressed her gratitude by stating: “Now we are able to study in groups; we hardly had books before, but now we can have several books and we will continue to make good use of the library.”

The true impact goes beyond the construction of infrastructure. It happens when communities take ownership of spaces, care for them, and ensure that they continue to benefit many other generations of children.

More than 400 goats have now been distributed to families through the Goat Pass On Initiative. But for ChildFund, the real work begins after the handover.

A sustainable livelihood is not created by simply providing an asset. It is built through consistent support that helps families protect, grow, and benefit from that investment over time.

In Ribáuè District, Nampula Province, our team, together with our implementing partner Watana, is carrying out a preventive vaccination and deworming campaign to keep the goat herds healthy and productive.

These routine interventions reduce the risk of disease, safeguard families' livelihoods, and ensure the goats continue to generate income, improve household nutrition, and strengthen food security.
What makes this initiative even more impactful is the "Passing on the Goat" model.

As the goats reproduce, beneficiary families pass on offspring to other households, creating a ripple effect that extends opportunities to more families and children across the community.

This is how lasting change happens—not through one-time distribution, but through continuous partnership, technical support, and community ownership.

Every healthy goat is more than livestock. It is an investment in resilience. A source of opportunity. And a pathway towards a stronger future for children and their families.

For years, families in the communities of Phatyra and Josina, in Ribáuè District, Nampula Province, walked long distances every day just to collect water. Time spent searching for this basic necessity often came at the expense of children's education, family livelihoods, and community well-being.

Today, that story is changing.

With the inauguration of two new water boreholes, more than 6,000 people now have access to safe, clean water close to home.
This means healthier families, improved hygiene and sanitation, fewer waterborne diseases, more children in school, and more time for parents to invest in farming, businesses, and other income-generating activities.

Access to safe water is more than a basic service—it is an investment in health, dignity, opportunity, and a stronger future for entire communities.

The boreholes were constructed as part of ChildFund's Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme, which is helping create healthier, safer, and more resilient communities where children can thrive.

Implemented in partnership with the WATANA Association, this initiative reflects the power of local partnerships and sustainable solutions to create lasting change.

Every new source of safe water brings us one step closer to a future where no child's potential is limited by the lack of this most essential resource.
