“Tis the Season”

To all who have already contributed to the 2025 Lake Rabun Foundation Annual Fund-THANK YOU! The Annual Fund is the primary resource that allows the LRF to award scholarships and provide financial aid to charitable organizations in Rabun County. At a recent meeting of the LRF trustees, two Rabun residents, who serve daily on the front line of Rabun ministries, related their experiences in working with the needy in Rabun County. They reported food shortages, rising demand for basic household and personal items, and increased costs for essentials. These were not stories of holiday cheer, but powerful reminders of the real challenges many of our neighbors are facing. Thanks to your generosity, the foundation has been able to award additional grants to several charitable organizations helping address these needs. Notably, the LRF made an additional $25,000 grant to the Mountain Branch of the Food Bank.

Friday September 5, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm; Meet at Rabun Beach Boat Ramp

Keeping Lake Rabun Beautiful – one load at a time!
Lake Rabun’s natural beauty is pristine. Help us keep it that way! Get your hands dirty and your clothes wet to keep Lake Rabun beautiful. This is manual labor with glorious scenery! Bring gloves, a hat, a can-do attitude, and sunscreen. As always, Georgia Power personnel will be on hand to assist!

Please let Melissa and Bob Clinkscales know at (404) 218-2879 or at [email protected] that you plan to attend.

At midday we will break for fellowship and lunch (but only after you wash your hands). So that Melissa might place our lunch order, we need RSVPs not later than Thursday September 4th. We can always use more boats, so if you have a suitable boat, please bring it to help pick up shoreline trash. If you do not have a boat, there is plenty of work at the boat ramp as well as on the work boats that need labor!

Thursday, July 3th, 2025 | Starts at Dusk (9:15 pm +/-) | Weather Permitting

Boater safety is a top priority. We kindly ask that all boaters follow these commonsense rules to help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone:

When arriving for the fireworks, the entire Lower Basin beyond Witham Point is a no-wake zone. Please avoid creating a wake that may disturb the flotilla of boats already adrift.

NO WAKE (IDLE SPEED) when departing the fireworks. Michael Crowe and Paynter Higgins will coordinate three vessels with yellow flashing lights to lead the procession out of the Lower Basin. Do not pass these boats. Georgia DNR and Rabun County law enforcement will be on hand to enforce the no-wake rule. The Lakemont-Wiley fireboat will bring up the rear and assist any boaters in need.

When departing, stay far enough to the right to allow space for oncoming boat traffic.

After sunset, all boats underway must display proper lights—Navigation lights (red and green) and an Anchor light (white). When stopped, boats must display the Anchor light. A backup source of light is strongly recommended.

Empty all ballast tanks before heading out.

Check your life jackets (PFDs) to ensure there is one for every passenger. All children under age 13 must wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved PFD when the vessel is underway.

The LRA encourages all boaters and fireworks spectators to enjoy this cherished 4th of July tradition safely and courteously.

Memorial Day Incident on Bear Gap Road
Be Alert, Be Vigilant, Be Smart - and Be Safe.

Our lake community is our refuge, and we consider it safe and secure. But even here we need to remain alert.

Unfortunately we are compelled to inform the Lake Rabun community about an incident that occurred on Memorial Day around 9:30 am. A young woman guest of a lake resident was walking her dog along Bear Gap Road in the vicinity of Minnehaha Falls. As she walked past a silver/ gray pickup truck, a white male wearing a red shirt and a ball cap pointed a cross bow at her and told her to get in the truck. She refused and was able to run away and get safely back to her home.

911 was called immediately and the Rabun County Sherriff’s office responded quickly. A number of deputies searched the area and patrolled surrounding roads, but were not able to locate the suspect or his vehicle. Deputies also asked local residents to check for any security footage that might show the vehicle.

Incidents like this are exceedingly rare in our lake community, but they can occur. We encourage our lake residents to be alert, remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and walk with a friend. We want everyone to be able to enjoy our community and remain safe.

It's spring clean-up at Minnehaha Trail this Saturday, April 26th, at 9:00 AM.

Please bring tree clippers, rakes, trash bags, and any other tools you think might be useful.

We will spread rock along the hillside to prevent erosion, which Georgia Power has donated, pruning tree limbs, picking up trash, and cleaning out the swale along the ridge to promote runoff and minimize further erosion.

Thanks for joining us!

A big thank you to Johnny Prickett for going above and beyond to keep our lake beautiful—he’s picked up trash from the Barn Inn to the Triangle not once, but twice this month! His efforts are a great reminder that it only takes a few minutes to make a big difference. Let’s all follow Johnny’s lead and help keep Lake Rabun clean for everyone to enjoy.

Dear Lake Rabun Resident,

Lake Rabun will be drawn down today, Monday, March 17th. This drawdown is needed to make repairs to the draft tube at the dam. The lake will be down until Friday, March 28th. Once this work is completed, the lake will refill.

Lake Rabun must be lowered (3’-5' feet) to an elevation of approximately 1683.0. (Normal lake elevation is 1688.0). The lake should be down near 5 feet down by Friday, March 21st. Once this work is complete the lake will begin to refill to normal elevation later that day.

We will update you if any changes to this schedule. If you have any questions regarding this information, please feel free to contact Stephen Wilson at 706-982-0105.

Sincerely,
North Georgia Lake Resources Office
