It starts with a conversation. 🗣️ Talking early and openly with young people about the risks of substance use makes a real difference. You don't need all the answers—just a willingness to listen without judgment.
Tips for a great chat:
Pick a relaxed, everyday moment (like driving in the car).
Ask open-ended questions about how they are feeling.
Listen more than you lecture.
Explore the CDC Overdose Prevention Resources for free tools and guides to help start the talk today.

There's no end to the pressures that youth are presented with on a daily basis. Be sure to talk to them about messages that may come up on their phones that could pressure them into doing things they do not necessarily want to do but may do against their better judgment.

Our prevention partners at Informed Families put out this important reminder that digital peer pressure does not always happen in person. Sometimes it begins in a text, a group chat, or a message that can put your child in a tough spot.

When children see messages like "Don't tell your parent," "Everyone is doing it," or "Just send it", they need a simple way to pause before responding.

Teach them The Group Chat Test starting with: Would I still feel okay about this if a trusted adult saw it?

That one question could help kids slow down, recognize pressure, and make safer choices online. The goal is not to scare kids, but to help them to pause, think, and know they always have a way out.

Prevention starts with connection - remember that small conversations now make a big difference later.
