Please read!! πŸ¦‡βœ‹βŒ
If you find a downed bat, the most important thing is to not touch it bare handed! Even if the bat is perfectly healthy, it will still be destroyed for rabies testing if there’s any suspicion of a possible bite. By protecting yourself, you are also protecting the very bat that you are trying to help!

Look at that precious little Cinnabon! 😍
Although rare, we do have Hoary Bats in Florida! πŸ¦‡πŸ’•πŸ‘πŸ₯Ή
Hoary bats are the largest of the tree bat species, but they are actually not the largest bat in Florida! That award goes to the Florida Bonneted Bat! πŸ¦‡πŸ†

You are adorable, Hercules, and a wonderful ambassador for your fellow Cinnabons! πŸ˜‚πŸ¦‡

πŸ¦‡ Meet the Brazilian/Mexican Free-tailed Bat (Tadarida brasiliensis)πŸ¦‡

This species is not just a master of agility, but also the star of the world’s largest known bat colony!
Nestled in southern Texas at Bracken Cave, this colony is a breathtaking spectacle, housing an estimated 15 million batsβ€”the largest known mammalian concentration on Earth!

Fast Flyers with a Purpose:
These bats are renowned for their incredible speed, capable of cruising at over 60 miles per hour (they have actually been recorded hitting speeds over 100 mph) and diving from altitudes of over 10,000 feet to catch migrating moths.
Their diet is crucial for controlling agricultural pests like cotton bollworm moths. The Bracken colony alone is estimated to consume over 100 tons of these moths every summer night. Could you imagine a world without this level of natural pest control for our crops?

A Social and Vocal Marvel:
At dusk, they emerge in staggering numbers from places like Bracken Cave, forming dense clouds that can even be detected on weather radars. Their complex social structures include massive maternity colonies where females rear their young.

Facing Environmental Challenges:
Despite their impressive numbers, Brazilian/Mexican Free-tailed bats confront significant threats such as habitat destruction, pesticide use, wind energy development, and climate change.
Conserving their habitats and supporting bat conservation projects are vital steps toward ensuring their survival and maintaining a well-balanced ecosystem. πŸ’š

Join us in marveling at these fascinating creatures and consider supporting conservation efforts to protect their habitats! Together, we can ensure that the Brazilian/Mexican Free-tailed bat continues to soar through our night skies!

Stay tuned for more fascinating facts as we continue to talk more about our Florida bats!

Look at those sweet lil’ babies! πŸ₯°πŸ¦‡

Say hello to the latest craze - the all girl baby bat garage band! We know it's a really unique niche, but when your passion leads you somewhere, you just have to follow. The girls haven't really settled on a name yet (they were most disappointed to learn that The Beetles and Iron Butterfly were already taken). Perhaps The Magical Musical Moth Machine? Your suggestions for a really cool name are most welcome!

So far this month, we have welcomed 87 bats into direct care here at Bat World MidCities. (Yes, that's 87 bats in 19 days) We have, sadly, lost a few to injury or severe dehydration and starvation, some have been transferred to our satellite subpermittees, and some have been released. However, we still have a large number of bats in care and more on the way. Please remember to never handle any wild animal barehanded or attempt to care for it yourself. Contact a qualified rehabilitator right away and make arrangements to get the bat to them as quickly as possible. Please understand that we cannot pick up from you or provide updates; we are busy feeding all the bats we already have. We may be able to secure a transport volunteer, but if you are able to bring the bat to us that would be most helpful.
