Just a note to hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving and the opportunity to spend time with loved ones and friends. We said goodbye to 3 well known, wonderful members of the mental health consumer community last month, Adam O'Conner,Marilyn and Sheila will all be missed. During the upcoming Holidays, remember and treasure those times. People who have mental illness live 25 years less on average than the general public. So be good to yourself, take care of yourself, be careful, and have a great Thanksgiving!

Please accept this correction:
Adam O' Conner
April 1974-October 2014
A "Celebration of life" service will be held Tuesday November 4, 2014 at the First Presbyterian church in Bartow Florida. the address in Bartow is 355 South Florida Ave. The Celebration will begin at 11 am. Please bring pictures you are willing to share with each other to enhance the celebration and good times we all had with Adam. Many in his family lived in other states and it would mean much to them to see these pictures.
Adam accomplished many things in his life. He was a support group Facilitator in both in DBSA and NAMI Connections, He was a Peer to Peer Mentor and a Nationally trained State Trainer for Florida for both of these programs. He completed the extensive and difficult Provider Education training program as a team member. He also was flown to the NAMI national site to assist in the re-writing and updating of the Peer to Peer manual that is currently used. Adam served on the NAMI POLK board of Directors before other concerns required his attention elsewhere. Adam was very active and contributed as well as participated as part of the backbone to the Peace River Center's Drop in Center. Part of Adams life he spent working for Tri-County and with many people in DCF as a Transformation Specialist. In this capacity he worked on every aspect that affect people with mental illness and was an ardent supporter of ending discrimination and stigma. One of his favorite phases was "Nothing for us without us" !
Adam is survived by his Mother Irene Roberts, sisters and brothers, Jennifer O' Conner Watson, Kathleen Roberts, Matthew Roberts, Ariel O' Conner, Riley O' Conner and many other Family and friends.
Adam's ashes will be scattered in Key West per his wishes at a later date. In lieu of Flowers please donate in Adam's name to these or other charities. NAMI POLK, or to any other mental health ,Adult or Child abuse shelters.

I want to convey my deepest sadness at hearing about Adam O'Conners passing and sympathy to his family and to the many friends he has everywhere, but especially those of us who live in Polk, Highlands and Hardee County. There are some suffering with mental illness in this area who may not have known Adam, but so many of us do. Adam has touched the lives of everyone, even those he didn't know in many ways to help their suffering, end stigma and promote recovery and wellness for many years of everyone, including me. Adam and I have been friends for many years, he has always been a good friend and I will miss him always. His influence however, will always be apparent in the many of us, that his untiring work as our peer, has progressed, in the blossoming of each of our own steps in recovery. His dedication and hard work will continue and be a tribute to him, as it always has been, in all that we do. Adam I miss you.
