Cats at FSC

Cats at FSC Official page for the cats at Florida Southern College. Approximately 30 cats call Florida Southern College home. Please DO NOT FEED THE CATS.

A TNR program was established in 2008 to have the cats spayed, neutered, and vaccinated. The Care Team is responsible for all aspects of the cats’ care, including but not limited to:

• Daily feedings
• Monthly flea preventatives
• Ensuring cats receive proper vet care (injuries, illness, vaccine updates, etc.)
• TNRing new cats

The Campus Cat Club was founded in 2016 and holds fundraising events

throughout the year to help offset the costs of food and vet care. If you see the cats, please do not chase after them. While a few of the cats (such as Dexter, Gilbert and Carrot) typically enjoy the attention of people, the vast majority of them are feral. They are afraid of people, and we ask that you give them their space. A few of them are on specific diets for various health needs. We also feed several stations on plates to deter coyotes, raccoons, and cane toads. We monitor how much the cats eat each evening, as changes in appetite can indicate illness. If a cat does not come to dinner, eats only a little, or doesn’t eat at all, we have to determine if the cat is not feeling well or just full on snacks. WAYS TO HELP:
• Amazon Wish List
• Target Registry
• Campus Drop-Off (Safety Office on Ingraham & Duke)
• Monetary Donations (PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, please message us for cash or check info).
*TNR stands for Trap, Neuter, Return. Feral cats are humanely trapped, spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and returned to their community. A small portion of the left ear is removed, which lets others know the cat has been fixed and doesn’t need to be trapped again.

*Negative commentary and harassing other followers or admins will not be tolerated
*Do not steal or alter photos, i.e., removing the watermarks, cropping, etc.

In spring of 2014, I met 2 little black cats outside of my old office at Edge Hall. 1st, I met Jake. About 2 weeks later, he convinced his big brother, Heckle, to come with him to my office. Heckle was quieter (briefly!) and more aloof in those early days, but once he trusted me, he became the (Philosopher) King of Edge Hall and the rest of FSC! The other cats would say he was a tyrant, though.

Through them, I met Nan and learned about the campus cat program. I’ve been involved ever since, thanks to these 2 little ambassadors. ❤️

To cats, Heckle could be quite the bully (Hobo could attest to that), but to people, he was a loving, gentle baby. Heckle would have a full conversation with you, and judge you with the knowledge of one who KNOWS he’s superior, but is too lazy to take over the world just yet. He’d just settle for letting humans be his servants. 😹

In January of 2016, Heckle nearly died from a blocked bladder; thus starting a life of bladder issues. The best thing to come from this was meeting his incredible vet, Dr. Jennifer Kimble at All Creatures Animal Clinic. She saved his life.

To help cover that vet bill, we held the very 1st yard sale. We’ve been holding the yard sales ever since as our biggest fundraiser. Heckle started that, because of course he loved to be bougie and expensive. 😅

In August of 2019, I was finally able to adopt Heckle and Jake. Heckle immediately got on my bed and purred. He became head of the household! He continued to have health issues—dental, more bladder issues, and finally, diabetes. He struggled with pancreatitis, 2 hypoglycemia events, neuropathy, bladder spasms, and UTIs. We tried everything.

On Thursday, Dr. Kimble told me she needed to try to catheterize him to find out why there was so much inflammation and bladder swelling, as a UTI wouldn’t cause this. Maybe there were crystals again. When she called me later, I knew this was different. My boy who had survived so much had come to the end. There were no crystals, but his urethra had ruptured. She told me, “I can’t fix this.” I had to call Nan.

I went home and got his most comfy blanket, Nan picked me up, and together we loved him across Rainbow Bridge with Dr. Kimble crying with us.

Oh how I miss you, my sweet, chatty, gentle Heckle! Tell Hobo, The Mooses, and Dexter I love and miss them, too. No more pain, my baby boy. I tried my best. I tried so hard. I love you forever, Heckle.

I’ve never gone out looking for a cat to adopt. Our paths cross when the time is right; when they need me, which is often when I also need them. It’s all in God’s timing.

I wanted to take Becker home the day I met him.

He had a distinctive spark in his eye and a calm, gentle presence similar to Buck. I had a silly idea of wanting to adopt them both so they could become best friends and hang out on the couch together. As tempting as it was, I wasn't in a place to responsibly adopt either of them at the time.

In 2023, days after losing Mrs. Moose, Buck was injured and needed a safe place to go. Giving him the care he needed to heal physically helped heal my heart. Buck settled right in and helped Mrs. P adjust to indoor life upon her terminal cancer diagnosis. Evelyn joined us later that year after developing hyperthyroidism. He grieved Mrs. P when she passed the following summer. Evelyn would stick around just long enough to let a terrified, one-eyed Cheddar know that he would be okay here, and then he joined Mrs. P in Heaven on the two-year anniversary of Mrs. Moose reuniting with Mr. Moose.

A few weeks later in March (2025), Becker was hospitalized and found to be diabetic and FIV+. I was honestly afraid of taking on a diabetic cat, but there was no way Becker could return to the colony. He couldn’t be handled at the time, so he wasn’t a good candidate for rescue placement either.

I spent hours researching everything I could think of and supported Becker to the best of my ability. He bounced back and discovered all the joys of being an indoor kitty alongside Cheddar, becoming the snuggly couch-loving kitty I always hoped he would be.

It took time, but I finally got Buck and Becker on the couch together. During my workdays, Becker was my dedicated office assistant. He attended meetings and made edits if he didn’t like what I wrote. I had to keep an extra chair right next to mine, otherwise he would lay across my hands and not let me type.

Last fall, his diabetes went into remission, an incredible blessing.

Taking on older, medically complex, and hospice kitties is incredibly challenging. I never know how long I'll have with each one, and it never feels like enough time... but how that time is spent is more important than the amount of time given.

I thought Becker would have more time, but his health began declining a few weeks ago. It wasn’t the diabetes returning.

There were countless vet visits, tests and treatments, but it didn’t get him back on track. In short, an issue with his bone marrow was suspected and this was something he couldn't beat.

He was more energetic over the weekend, but on Monday night he seemed tired again, and he let me know he was ready the next morning. I think the other kitties knew. Buck let Becker join him on his favorite chair, and Cheddar gave him a gentle nose boop before we left for the vet.

Becker purred quietly as I held him wrapped in the soft blue blanket that Dexter once loved. He passed peacefully around 4:30 pm.

I stepped away from my position on the care team several months ago in preparation of starting a new chapter in life; my fiancé and I are getting ready for a move up north, and we were so excited for Becker to enjoy a bigger house and cooler weather. The house has a little side porch that's perfect for a catio and I think he would've loved it.

He never seemed to like the summers here.

Losing him now... it's unexpected and devastating. It feels a bit unfair, but Becker beat the odds many times before over the years. I suppose God needed to call him home this time.

Becker was and is so deeply loved, and he will forever hold a special place in my heart.

In loving memory of Becker.

Hello everyone! Curley is back on campus. Our care team had noticed she was having trouble eating due to mouth pain. We suspected she had a tooth infection. Last week we were able to take her to the vet and she had a full mouth extraction except for her top and bottom front teeth. She had to stay overnight to get fluids since she was dehydrated and she also got her vaccines updated. Between Curley and a medication refill for Bess we spent $3,050.81. Thanks to everyone’s amazing generosity and donations we still have some money in our account and Curley is eating and drinking again! 🩷😸
