FRLS is a non-profit law firm serving 13 FL counties, offering low-income individuals access to justice through legal advice, representation, and advocacy.

Florida Rural Legal Services, Inc. (FRLS) was founded in 1966 as a private, non-profit corporation. FRLS provides free civil legal assistance to low-income people in thirteen counties in South Central Florida. FRLS assists clients with legal issues in Consumer, Employment, Public Benefits, Economic Stability, Housing, Elder, and Farmworker law, as well as Civil Rights and Family Law. FRLS also provides legal assistance to migrant workers throughout the state of Florida. Currently, FRLS has seven regional offices with a staff of over 100, including 50 plus attorneys, and approximately 10,000 closed cases each year. 60 Days of Giving: Meet the People Behind the Mission 💙

As part of our 60 Days of Giving campaign, we're sharing the stories behind the people who make FRLS's mission possible.

For FRLS’s Advocacy Director, Michelle Trunkett, her "why" began with a simple garnishment case more than 20 years ago. While the legal issue itself was straightforward and may not have required a lawyer, Michelle represented her anyway. After the hearing, the client offered a heartfelt thank you and a hug that has never been forgotten.

That experience became a powerful reminder that access to justice is about more than legal outcomes. It's about standing beside people during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

After more than two decades of service, that remains the reason Michelle continues to believe in FRLS's mission and the work we do every day.
