What's Happening at Olustee?
The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War have been trying to ask permission to perform a simple, non-invasive GPR scan of the Monument Cemetery in Olustee-to determine whether Union soldiers from the 1864 battle may be buried there.
So far, groups associated with the battlefield and the Monument Cemetery Association have not responded or responded in the negative.
Olustee was fought by both white volunteer regiments and three regiments of the United States Colored Troops.
Yet: Why is a respectful, standard preservation scan being ignored? We believe every soldier deserves to be remembered. We also believe the full story of Olustee-including Black military service, must be honored.
There's more to the story.
Follow our effort to bring truth, dignity, and recognition to the U.S. soldiers who fought and fell at Olustee.
