Piecemakers Quilters

Piecemakers Quilters The Piecemakers Quilters create quilts for donation to local victims of domestic violence. It's just a quilt. A simple thing. It's all we do as a group. (Ok.

Unless you are escaping from domestic violence, often with your children, and the most you can carry with you fits into a paper sack. Unless it seems like warmth and comfort and beauty have gone from your life and you don't know what the future holds. But then a hand-made, warm, comforting, and beautiful quilt is given to you to be yours always. And one to each of your children..You wrap yourself

in it and, even if it's just for a moment, you feel secure again. The Piecemakers Charity Quilters of Lake Zurich, IL supplies those quilts—the work of our hands for the comfort and support of those starting the long and difficult journey away from domestic violence. In partnership with A Safe Place, Lake County's resource and shelter for domestic violence victims, The Piecemakers have distributed over 1,100 quilts to those in need since our founding in 2013. All the work of our hands, all made from donated fabric, tools, and time. Nothing else. We have a good time, too!) But it makes a real difference to the women and children receiving our quilts. If you live in Lake or Cook County, IL and quilt (or want to learn how—we teach!), come and join us. If you have quilting fabric, tools, notions, or partly-finished quilts to give away, please think of us. If you are a long-arm quilter willing to donate your services—even just once a year—we need you. We are a tax-deductible charity and rely solely on donations to do our work. It's not just a quilt. It’s so much more.

Harriet Powers was a talented quiltmaker and formerly enslaved woman whose story quilts are celebrated as masterpieces of American folk art. Born on a plantation in Georgia, Powers used her fabric to tell stories inspired by history, faith, and community. Celebrate her legacy with the Harriet Powers stamp.

Almost all of the time, the Piecemakers work with faith that what we do will find homes with those who will take much needed comfort in a hand made quilt. We believe our partners at A Safe Place/Lake County Crisis Center do a wonderful job making sure they are given to those most in need of that comfort. Because of their need for secrecy to stay safe, we don’t expect thanks from our “clients.” So when one goes out of their way to tell us what her quilt means to her, it’s truly a wonderful gift. It fills our hearts, and we go about our work with faster fingers and renewed commitment, and much joy. We send blessings this season to all who have received Piecemakers quilts over the last 12 years, hoping they have brought you warmth and a little bit of comfort and peace. (A blow up version of the letter is in the comments.)

The Quilt Train of Arkansas, 1935

In the Ozarks, women took their quilts on trains — selling and trading them with neighboring towns. They used colorful fabrics from old clothes and blankets, piecing them together with needles and threads from their limited resources.

“The quilt was our ticket,” said Mary Jane Roberts. “It carried warmth across the tracks.”

Each quilt told a story of resilience and survival, woven into every square. They became local treasures, quilts of warmth traded for bread, coal, or kindness.

That's right, give 'em the ol' stink eye before you bust out the seam ripper. You'll be piecing together quilts like a boss in no time. Just don't forget to blink occasionally.
