April is distracted driving awareness month! Distracted driving is more than texting. Calls, scrolling, maps and videos all take attention away from the road.

Lake Zurich Police Sergeant Graduates from Prestigious
Staff and Command School

The Lake Zurich Police Department is pleased to announce the recent graduation of Sergeant Eric Bereza from the School of Police Staff and Command (SPSC) at Northwestern University.

Sergeant Bereza has successfully completed the ten-week Staff and Command program which was held two weeks a month in Elmhurst, Illinois from September, 2025 through January, 2026. The program implemented by the Center for Public Safety in 1983 has graduated over 25,000 students both nationally and internationally. Sergeant Bereza was a student in SPSC Class #620 which accommodated a total of 38 students. He is a 20-year veteran of the Lake Zurich Police Department and was promoted to sergeant in 2021.

“We are very proud of Sergeant Bereza and his recent accomplishment,” expressed Chief of Police, Steve Husak. “We look forward to him applying his education and training to the Lake Zurich Police Department.”

The School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in a total of twenty-seven core blocks of instruction with major topics of study including: Leadership, Human Resources, Employee Relations, Organizational Behavior, Applied Statistics, Planning and Policy Development, Budgeting and Resource Allocation.

The Center for Public Safety was established at Northwestern University in 1936 with the specific goal of expanding university-based education and training for the law enforcement community. Since its inception, the Center has broadened its original objective and now provides a variety of courses and programs in the area of Police Training, Management Training and Executive Development.

Happy National Law Enforcement
Appreciation Day. 🚔

This is a day to recognize our staff for the important (and sometimes challenging) careers they have chosen. We all depend on law enforcement to protect people from crime and violence. Our first responders ensure public safety, address incidents involving domestic violence, substance misuse disorders, and mental health challenges.

We also rely on law enforcement professionals to investigate crime carefully and thoroughly and to uncover and uncover those that victimize the vulnerable.

On January 9th, we encourage members of our community to take a moment to recognize these challenges and to show support to those who serve & protect.

We thank the men and women of the Lake Zurich Police Department for the dedication, sacrifice, and commitment to the rule of law they display every day.
