Ready for more Gulf red snapper
Recreational red snapper season in the Gulf will open again for private recreational anglers. Additional dates include Nov. 21, 22, 27, 28 and 29. These additional days were added to the fall red snapper season due to weather impacting angler ability to get on the water during earlier season dates. During this season, private recreational anglers may harvest red snapper in Gulf state and federal waters. State for-hire operations may also participate but are limited to fishing for red snapper in Gulf state waters only. More info: bit.ly/35IHIfP

Thanks to Governor Ron DeSantis for increasing Snapper season!

20-62-CWS | September 4, 2020 BILOXI, Miss. – For only the second time in a decade, Mississippi anglers will have the opportunity to harvest Red Snapper, Gray Triggerfish and Greater Amberjack at the same time. This opportunity can be attributed in large part to the Tails n’ Scales program along...

Labor Day is a tribute to the contributions American workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Some of the hardest workers we know are commercial fishermen. In the Gulf, our fishermen harvest hundreds of millions of pounds of the domestic seafood we eat in the U.S., and their industry contributes billions of dollars to our economy. Tip your hat to these hard-working Americans, and enjoy some Gulf seafood today! (Photo courtesy of NOAA)

in Mississippi it's mandatory for recreational and for-hire vessels to report Red Snapper through Tail N' Scales? If you plan on making a trip, don't forget to register. You can download the mobile app at dmr.ms.gov/index.php/snapper or register online at tailsnscales.org.

While some might dispute whether this is good or bad, nobody can dispute that more and better data is needed for red snapper on both of Florida's coasts. Your voluntary data reporting helps us anglers AND fishery managers in ways you might not yet understand - for those of you who have already logged your Gulf trips, we at Angler Action thank you! And for those in the Atlantic, you can continue to log using iAngler and/or the app myfishcount, which is also an Angler Action project with SAFMC.
We also want to thank you for being patient with the quirks and bugs we've been working out of the Gulf Red Snapper app. Doing that with a live app is certainly not ideal, but the time constraints gave us no other option. With your input, the next version of the app will be better for all of us - anglers, managers, and the fish. So please keep at it.
You can 'back log' your trips from this season, but if you want the data to help us now please don't wait more than a couple more days. Most important are the depths fished, time spent, number of anglers, and any/all info you can provide about the fish you let go.
Tight lines everyone - catch 'em up, respect your releases, and be safe out there.

We just received word from NOAA Fisheries that Snapper Grouper Amendment 43, which allows for a red snapper season in 2018, has been approved!!

The final rule should be published next week and we’ll know more then about the opening dates for red snapper harvest in the federal waters (3 - 200 nautical miles) of the South Atlantic (NC, SC, GA, and East coast of FL through the Keys). We’ll keep you posted.

We're into our 3rd week of Gulf Red Snapper season. The best way to make this season count for all of us is to report your trip info in the free mobile app, iAngler Gulf Red Snapper or log directly into the website www.angleraction.org.

Red snappers are a different kind of fish - they behave differently than most snappers and groupers in their spawning behaviors, growth rates, habitats used and more. The only way to help managers better understand the species -- and get the management plan right -- is for them to understand the fish and our interactions with them. And right now, logging in iAngler is the best way to do that.

If you already went, you can still log your trip! Just date the trip accordingly and enter accurate information.

So far, as you can see, most red snapper trips originate from the western third of the panhandle. But we've had trips out of Key West too - every fish logged helps lead us to a .

About half of the trips reported in iAngler Gulf Red Snapper include the depth fished. The most common range in week 1 was the 61-90 foot range. Almost all (98%) were between 30-feet and 300-feet.
To contribute to this citizen science project, simply download the free iAngler Gulf Red Snapper app. You can then create your profile and start reporting your trips. Your data will help us ensure appropriate access, better manage the fish, all while building your own permanent, private log book.
