Good morning from the sweethearts! Just a little video on my second stop of the morning. I have ten absolute angels who come to meet me at my road each morning. They patiently wait for me to feed Teddy, Galadriel, Waggy, and Moxley at the first stop near my house. They come running all the way down and follow me back to their spot. Wouldn’t hate it if they just came all the way to the end of my road here and stayed at my property. A girl can dream, can’t she? LOL!

Either way, I’m posting in hopes of food help. We are finally finishing up our shower remodel, but I’ve now maxed out ten cards between the cat food, surgeries, and the shower. I did have a contractor come by to see the progress we’ve been able to do on our own, but we honestly aren’t carpenters or plumbers and we honestly cannot do it on our own. The contractor agreed to give me a severely discounted rate to at least have the shower put in and functional. Not pretty, not perfect, but professionally installed to be able to work. (We’ve been without a shower for a solid month.)

I just placed an order from PetSmart for 30 lbs of dry and two 48 packs of wet food, but that will get us through about 3 days. Our rent ($400) is due tomorrow, and I have to get this shower up this week. So that’s another $600 to the contractor out of my pocket.

We’ve done such an incredible job getting all females spayed, and that last handful of males is on the list, but there so much more that needs to be done, and one income is hurting tremendously. I’m linking our lists down below. If you can help at all, it is greatly appreciated!!! I’ve cut back quite a bit in wet food in the mornings and it’s hard, because they always cry for more, but there’s only so much one person can do. It takes a village! I can provide our address for drop off, as I know some of you that are local don’t mind running some by. We are good for a couple of days and can wait on deliveries, though.

This is what I’m dealing with with Patches and Jasper. I thought they would be good candidates to get adopted since I’ve been their constant from tiny babies, but they’re clearly NOT cut out for home life. Mama Wayne certainly is, but she came from indoors and is older and already socialized, but she won’t be as “marketable” with her eye and the fact she’s not a kitten. Her children, on the other hand, they were born outside and are friendly and social with me, but no one else. Patches has warmed up well over the last week that they’ve been in the house, but Jasper isn’t doing well. He stays hidden. It breaks my heart. I don’t want to return him to the other side of the park with his “big brothers” that he’s gotten so bonded to, but he’s not playing with my boys like Patches is. They try, but he just doesn’t have confidence indoors, despite being so bubbly and bouncy outside. It’s not fair to him or humane to allow him to live his life in fear indoors. We decided it’s best that they stay here with us and not going up for adoption due to this fact. However, they’ll be immensely loved and cared for, and they won’t be adding to the homeless cat population! We have to look out for their mental well-being, as well as their physical health.

Taming Feral Kittens - Should You Let Kittens Socialize at their Own Pace?

Ben Franklin left something out here. "Nothing in this world is certain except death and taxes and KITTENS! " It is true. If you get involved in TNR, there WILL be kittens. And what do you do with them? If they are TNR'd with the adults, you have already greatly improved their quality of life. But most trappers end up socializing and adopting out the kittens. Altered cats can enjoy a good quality of life in a colony, but it is hard to beat life as a loved family cat in warm home.

Niko was one of these kittens. Born in a neighborhood over-run with feral cats and free roaming dogs, Niko walked in a trap baited with KFC chicken. Yum. At 8 weeks, he was young enough to be socialized but possibly old enough to harbor a lifetime suspicion of strangers. Kittens like Niko bond closely to their family, but some may not extend that love to strangers. Happily, Niko made fast progress. He played with interactive toys, allowed handling with little fuss and took food from his foster mom's hand, but he clearly preferred cats to humans.

How can foster homes improve the adoptability of kittens like Niko? Some influencers on social media promote letting them come around on their own. They don't recommend touching the kitten at all until the kitten comes to you to be handled. They recommend plenty of hiding spots so the kitten can feel safe and invisible. And some disagree with separating from littermates to hasten the process. Do we agree?

I would agree if the kitten was going to live with me forever. But this passive socialization mind set results in fewer kittens getting into homes. It takes longer and, in some cases, it can be many months longer. This results in fewer kittens being helped. Why?

1- Mixing kittens isn't recommended due to the risk of spreading illness. So, while a foster home is waiting for a kitten to move at his own pace, kittens trapped in later TNR projects will likely have to be returned to site.

2- If kittens aren't actively socialized, they could be in foster for many months. A scared kitten will always choose a dark hiding spot to being handled. Kittens who can avoid human contact indefinitely may not learn to bond with humans during those early critical weeks of life. And hiding can become a hard-to-break habit. Few people want to adopt a cat who chooses to live their life under a bed. Is it humane to allow a cat to live a life of hiding in fear?

3- Kittens with a wilder temperament may not be identified until it is too late to return them to their colonies. It is difficult to predict how quickly an individual kitten will socialize. We have all been surprised by half grown kittens that completely socialized and tiny one pound babies that remained fearful for life. It is important to return kittens to their colonies before the weather turns cold and before their colony mates forget who they are. We know of one "rescuer" who trapped a kitten in August and then returned it to his colony in December. He was immediately chased off by the resident cats who considered him an intruder. For me, the cut off is a maximum of 2 to 3 weeks.

While we don't believe in forcing kittens to socialize, we do think they need a little push. Socializing kittens is an act of kindness that gives the kittens a chance at an indoor home. And if it is done expediently, it will leave a vacancy for other kittens needing a foster home.

The 4 main steps to socialization are C.A.T.S.

-Containment: House the kittens in a small space like a cage or bathroom. If they are scared, its okay to let them chill for the first day or so to get used to their new environment. But after their terror has subsided, remove hiding spots so they get used to your presence. If you have a tall cat tree or can put a cage up high near eye level, they will feel less threatened.

-Acclimatization: Start off with quiet voices and slow movements. As they become less fearful, introduce normal movements and sounds. Keeping a radio or TV on can help. Introduce them to people and cat-friendly animals. Use toys and treats so they develop a positive association with humans. With older ferals, consider feeding canned food or treats ONLY while you are in their presence so they associate you with good stuff.

-Touch: Begin touch with toys or soft bedding and then progress to your hands. Short sessions spread throughout the day are best. Start with brief pettings while feeding wet food, chicken or squeeze treats. As they relax, you can briefly pick up. My first "pick ups" are usually just to place them in front of food. With small kittens, you can watch TV with them in a hoody sweatshirt pocket or inside a covered cat bed. They feel safe while they get used to your presence.

-Socialization: Introduce the kittens to new people. If they are accepting touch, encourage visitors to hold them while feeding treats or hand them a wand-style toy to engage the kitten in play.

Did Niko tame down and find a home? Yes! He learned to approach people for food and toys and to accept handling without complaint. He was adopted with a very social kitten who will help him to continue to gain confidence around humans.

Happy Monday from the kitties! We have successfully spayed all females in the colonies, with the exception of two that just had litters. The little black girl in the top right plate on the second photo had a litter almost three weeks ago, and our little stripey girl had a litter two weeks ago. It definitely wasn’t what I wanted, but I did not have the transportation while they were still pregnant to get them done, and they popped right before I had the chance. It’s frustrating, but under control! Will get some pics of Jasper, Patches and mama Wayne shortly. They’ve been hanging out in the house with me the last 4 days and trying to get the. To decompress. Patches is getting the hang of it. Mama Wayne just lays in her box or on the cool floor watching the tablet. She doesn’t do much. Poor Jasper is still hiding constantly. Hopefully he’ll come back out of his shell. He’s such a funny little guy, but he may be going back out to his friends if he continues he’s to be depressed.

I know you all have been waiting on me to get it together and get some cats trapped. We’ve had nothing but issue after issue after issue personally. Life is slowing down enough for me to get them prioritized! I’ll have a better post tomorrow when I take them to Paws Plus in the morning, but wanted to give a quick update. I got “Wayne”, turns out, she’s a girl. And she’s obviously the mother of Patches and Jasper, whom I assumed were orphans. This now explains why she was always hanging out with them. It wasn’t until I saw her in heat two weeks ago and one of my remaining toms was with her. IYKYK… Patches and Jasper are so friendly now, they were easy to scoop up and put in the trap. They’re chilling until the morning. Waynetta took less than 5 minutes to get in the trap! She was laying at her preferred lawn and I walked right up, set it down next to her and she smelled the Sheba! (They never get the good stuff on daily feedings.) Her sniffer was working overtime and she walked right in the trap! I’m so proud of her! We got a brand new trap in today and I’m really liking the quick set function! Wish it had a rear door, but it works amazing! It caught mama Wayne! Now, wish these guys the best of luck! I will update in the morning. For now, we’re going to get some sleep because surgery day is always early and LONG!

Heather Calder Thanks to you and your dad for dropping off totes for feeding stations today! I’ll be working on cutting the holes in them and get them out in the morning!

I will 100% take any used items we’re in need of if you have it and are not using it! Right now I’m on the hunt for another extra large dog crate. If you’ve got one sitting around, I’ll absolutely take it off your hands. Me and the cats are not picky, but if it is used, please make sure it’s in decent condition. It doesn’t have to be pretty, it can even be dirty, I’ll clean it. But it DOES have to be safe. No loose wires, and the doors need to be able to latch.

Thank you so much for your continued support to the babies Lissette Rodriguez! We got your Amazon package yesterday! It helps so much!

Stay tuned for TNVR next week! To help us continue this mission of controlling the population, donations can be made directly to the account under Gabrielle Landers to Paws Plus Veterinary 863-583-5060. Each surgery is $65, and if any additional services or meds are needed at that time, it’s added to that. Anything at all is appreciated! Being so blessed with food helps take weight off the wallet to put into surgeries, as well! We’re slowly building our personal funds back up after being down from work for over a week due to the work truck being inoperable, but it’s getting there, and this has helped us breathe a little easier at night knowing they will not go a day without food. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all tremendously!!!

The angels were so grateful this morning! We got full bellies, thanks to you all! They LOVED the temptations food! They don’t get treats that often. Occasionally, I will bring half a box with me since I do give them to our cats at home. The neighborhood babies are always excited for special treats, and this was definitely a special day for them! I also included a photo of what my wagon looks like when I’m done feeding. That was a 15 lb bag that I opened before I left the house. The box is 32 cans. This is what I go through every single day. There are a lot of them, and I want to make sure they’re nice and full each day. Well do some TNVR next week, as I’m down to a handful of babies left to spay/neuter. I worked so hard last year and would hate for it to unravel again. With your help, I can continue this mission to help the street cats in our rural areas that have been forgotten about and unloved.

To keep our dream alive and help us keep these babies full and vetted, please check out our little wishlists I’m still an emotional wreck from the outpouring of love yesterday with all the food deliveries! I can never repay any of you for the help and love you’ve shown me and the angels! Your kindness is beyond appreciated! Let’s get these angels visible in the algorithm and share this post! 😻❤️
