Foster Care is the opening of your home to children who need temporary out-of-home placement in a nurturing, family environment. Foster care is temporary care in a family environment of children and youth from infancy to 21 years old. These children must leave their own families for a few weeks, months, or several years due to abuse, neglect, parent incapacitation, or the youth’s own unmanageable

behaviors. Foster Care’s ultimate goal is to reunite children with their families, prepare them for adoption and/or independent living. Our program works currently in partnership with 15 departments of Social Services that call on us often to place their children in our licensed foster homes. We as an agency take responsibility of a child that is in the DSS system. Our agency works closely with DSS departments around North Carolina. Our therapeutic program is a new venture for Boys and Girls Homes. The services will be coordinated by Amy Lawson. “In my role, we’ll be examining ways to help children who have been identified with a mental health diagnosis or who have behavior issues. This requires a higher level of care than has been necessary in Family Foster Care and will mean greater training and support for our Therapeutic Foster Families. Therapeutic homes can have only two (optimally 1) children. About our adoption program: While each child in need of adoption has a unique background, the children have all been identified by area departments of social services as abused, neglected, abandoned, or dependent. The children have either been freed for adoption or are in the process of being eligible for adoption because reunification is not possible. A child is not free for adoption until termination of parental rights has occurred. Boys and Girls Homes of NC provide pre- and post- adoption consultation and counseling, 24-7 availability and support, and access to support groups. Financially, most adopted children are eligible for State Adoption Assistance, tax benefits, and Medicaid coverage until 18 years of age. As of October 2007 adopted children age 12 or above are now eligible for tuition benefits for four years of college.

How are we making a difference?----> We are making a difference through YOU! Our Foster Care program works in partnership with 21 County DSS Agencies along Eastern NC. We work in partnership with foster parents, physicians, therapists, social workers, Guardian Ad Litems, and others to ensure that our children are being taken care of! So what do you say?.....Want to make a difference?
