💛 Behind every great Creator Zone camp are the people who choose to share their time, skills, and experience with the next generation.
During our Wearable Fashion & Technology Camp, we were incredibly fortunate to have Renee Sherwood of Renee Sherwood Design volunteer her entire week alongside our campers. Renee brought years of professional apparel design and development experience into the makerspace, giving campers the opportunity to learn from someone with real-world industry knowledge, having worked with brands such as Lululemon, Target and Nordstrom.
From helping campers think like designers to guiding them through the process of turning an idea into something they could actually create and wear, Renee gave our young makers something especially valuable: the chance to learn from someone who has built a career doing exactly what they were exploring.
We were also so grateful to have Rachel volunteering her time and expertise throughout the week. Rachel patiently helped campers learn new techniques, problem-solve when things did not go quite as planned, and experience the pride of making something with their own hands. 🧵✂️
And then there’s Jess. 💛
Jess first joined Creator Zone three years ago as a high school student volunteer. Today, she is one of our hired Camp Counsellors, an expert mediator, a trusted mentor to our campers, and an absolute whiz across just about every machine we put in front of her.
Watching a young volunteer grow into someone who now confidently teaches, leads, troubleshoots, and supports the next group of young creators is exactly the kind of full-circle we love at Creator Zone, providing development opportunities for staff and volunteers as well.
This camp was also truly special because of the friendships we saw develop and blossom between campers. Children came together over shared ideas, projects, problem-solving, and lots of creativity, and by the end of the week we had watched new connections form alongside all of the making. Those moments of belonging and collaboration are just as important to us as the skills they take home.
It is the care of people like Renee, Rachel, and Jess that makes these experiences so meaningful.
They do more than teach children how to sew, design, build, or use a new piece of technology. They help kids discover what they are capable of, uncover interests they may never have known they had, build confidence in new skills, and imagine where those skills could take them in the future.
Years from now, our campers may not remember every project they made or every challenge they completed, but they may very well remember the mentor who took their idea seriously, the friend they made while creating beside them, or the person who helped them realize, “I can do this.”
Those are the experiences that stay with children.
