José Antonio Páez Herrera (Curpa, Venezuela, June 13, 1790 - New York, United States, May 6, 1873) was a processor of Venezuela's independence. He was General, Chief of the National Army and Military Chief of the Department of Venezuela. In 1826, he led the separatist movement known as La Cosiata, which separated Venezuela from Greater Colombia, becoming an autonomous republic led by Páez, the Enlightened Citizen and El Taita. He was born in Curpa, Barinas Province, on June 13, 1790 (In the present Portuguese State) He came from a family of Canary origin, poor and numerous. He was the son of Juan Victorio Páez and Maria Violante Herrera, a native of Cuara (South of Quibor, Lara). He lived in a modest house by the river in his hometown. On July 1, 1809, he married Dominga Ortiz, dedicated to the cattle trade, learns the trade of the planner and becomes an expert rider in handling the rope and the spear. Between 1810 and 1813 belongs to the cavalry squad led by Manuel Antonio Pulido, to fight against the Spanish government, worked for the realistic governor of Barinas, Antonio Tíscar and Pedrosa, and after rejecting a promotion to captain, returned to the Republican forces of Pulido. He advances to the city of Barinas, which had been abandoned by the Spanish as a result of the Admirable Campaign of Simón Bolívar.
